Re: Job scheduler on HPUX
Thirdparty schedulers are having much more control and flexibility than inbuilt utilities. And very well managable.
For example , here are the key features for Control-M that widely used:
Provides you with a single point of control for job scheduling and file transfers by introducing file transfer capabilities into CONTROL-M
Keeps your data safe via secured file transfers
Provides you with file transfer runtime statistics in the CONTROL-M Enterprise Manager GUI
Allows you to restart from point of failure for a quick recovery
-----------------------------------------
Check Another thirdparty scheduler:
The UC4:global Architecture.

Re: Job scheduler on HPUX
Also check this for Control-M Advanced file transfer solution :
Business Challenge:
Many organizations are using file transfers as a method of integration between platforms and applications. As business processes span across multiple platforms, file transfers are becoming an integral part of the batch process. In many cases the tools being used to manage file transfers are separate from the job scheduler, which requires more resources and makes it difficult to meet service level agreements.
Business Need :
Use a single solution for file transfers and batch scheduling
Schedule secured file transfers with encryption and authentication
Monitor file transfer runtime statistics such as transfer rate, estimated remaining time etc.
Recover file transfer from the point of failure

Re: Job scheduler on HPUX
For HP-UX I have used ControlM & IBM Tivoli Job Scheduler.
I rate ControlM with 9/10 and for 7/10 for IBM JS.
ControlM is BMC product.
Adv over Cron,
Cron is inbuild and no need for investing money,
while others will provide centralised managemnet of batch jobs. Also you can control a job very well. Like for example a in/out condition between jobs and global conditions between systems/applications running on different systems.
Also if your 1st job fails the second will not be traggered automatically.
Finally I can be monitored by your centralised Operations.

Re: Job scheduler on HPUX
Another popular one is AutoSys - see http://www3.ca.com/solutions/Product.aspx?ID=253.
I don't think I've seen it in this thread yet. It's commonly used in distributed applications - for example, jobs on one server can be dependent on jobs on another server.
