Re: K class Not wanting to start up

Hi Leo:

Are you sure that's a 'CE06'. I can't match that code to the available documentation. Category "C" denotes system initialization, so things are pretty far along.

Re: K class Not wanting to start up

Hi Leo,

If you have cotten to this point in the boot, you should have already seen something like 'PRI (or ALT) CONSOLE INIT' and the console should have displayed data. This occurs before the system does ISL. I would start the boot again and watch the LCD messages. If you see the PRI CONSOLE message but do not see any data on the console, you have a bad terminal, cable, or possibly the core/io board is suspect. My first effort would be to swap the console.

Re: K class Not wanting to start up

Here is a link to the K370 troubleshooting guide. It lists all the display codes that you will see on the LCD screen.

http://us-support.external.hp.com/bhp/bin/doc.pl/screen=bhpDisplayDoc/sid=c976492416d78e5781?docId=22969dhtm&docType=HW-DETAILS&infoType=Troubleshooting&DOC_ID=30632wwI&PRODUCT_CATEGORY=HP+Servers%3A%3AHP+9000+Servers%3A%3AK-Class+Enterprise+Server%3A%3AK3xx&PRODUCT_FAMILY=K3xx&PRODUCT=HP+9000+K370+Server+%28A3663A%29&INFO_TYPE=#Major Code C: Sys Init Codes

There are a number of C codes, but CE06 is not one of them. The closest I could see was CEF6, which means the kernel is going to set up the page out daemon for paging.

If you are not seeing ANYTHING on the console, but the machine is getting this far, I would check the console, console settings, cable, power, etc. If you have another console, switch it out and see what happens.

Re: K class Not wanting to start up

Hi Leo

As said it looks like a console problem.

Ideas:-

Ping to this machine from another system as you reboot it, when it is answered it indicates that your problem machine has at least initialised and configured the lan card which is a fair way into its boot sequence.

Give it a little more time and then try a telnet or ftp to it.

If these work then as said its the console.

Re: K class Not wanting to start up

OK

Yes IT is CE06

I do see a PRI CONS 0 Message stream By.

Nope Can't Ping it, I let it go All night it is still sitting at CE06

and the Monitor Light does Go from Amber to Green, But nothing ever shows Up on the screen.

I did Try Reseating everything, Boards, memory, CPU , but it did nothing.

I will try swapping out the monitor, Cable, keyboard, Mouse and see IF we have another video card around.

I Appreciate your help

Re: K class Not wanting to start up

Hi Leo

Is this a multi processor machine?

If so then pull all processors except one and try again - if this fails swap the processior for another.

NB. Ensure that your are earthed - watch out for those wiggle amps.

If this fails then try reducing memory in the same way.

Re: K class Not wanting to start up

It is a Single processor unit.

Ok Here is the latest.

I have removed the Video card and now , it boots a little farther.

Line 1: WARN A008
Line 2: BOOT DEV 0

but stops there

I am going to see if I have another Video card.
if I can't do that I will see about putting a terminal on it.

Re: K class Not wanting to start up

Hi Leo,

WARN A008 means , system is unable to find a boot device/unable boot from the specified boot path.
for just conform this, i would suggest, try to boot through the install cd. if it boots , then your root disk may hv problem. or if you hv got root mirrored then try to boot from the mirror disk.

best of luck,
Sailesh.

Re: K class Not wanting to start up

OK , Got it back to the origial error, the warn was me forgetting to reconnect a scsi cable.

But what I have done is: swaped the video card with a another machine and powered them both up at the same time, that system came up Normally , the one in question did the same as it has been.
But whjat i noticed is the INIT CE06 on the system that is working is an IPL screen.

one of the local Manger suspects some one was playing with Some of the IPL settings, (I'm beggining to agree.) is there a way to reset those settings ?

Re: K class Not wanting to start up

I think I may see what part of the problem may be. You say that you switched out the monitor, video card, keyboard and mouse, so I am assuming the you used to have the machine come up to a GUI console instead of to the regulard HP 700/96 type terminal. What may be happening is that the output that you are used to seeing is trying to go to the regular console port instead of the other monitor port.

Do you have a terminal like a 700/96, or something similar, along with the appropriate cable, that you can plug into the console port of this machine? I would try that.

It sounds as if your console port may have been switched from what you are used to, to something else. Try the above if possible and see what happens.

Re: K class Not wanting to start up

A few suggestions:

1. Turn the key on the front of the machine all the way to the right. This puts it in "service mode".

2. Once you turn the power on wait a few seconds and type in "CTRL B" This is the control key plus the B key. This is case insensitive. It will prevent the machine from booting.

3. When you are good and ready, type in LS (crossing fingers) this will display the last 50 return codes from the machine and can be very helpful in debugging problems.

4. At the bottom of the screen in the left hand corner as well as the little LED display you should see C440. This means that the hardware checked out and it is ready to initialize the console. Type in CO and press return, then press any key to break the boot sequence.

5. Boot as normal.

Now if the above does NOT work then post the LS codes as well as anything else you have and this will provide a basis to work on what is wrong.
