Konica bizhubpro 7085 printer with HP-UX print spooling.

I have Jetdirect hppi software installed on
HP-UX 11i. How can I setup print spooler to
print to Konica printer from HP.
hppi install does not recognize it of course.

Re: Konica bizhubpro 7085 printer with HP-UX print spooling.

hppi is ONLY for HP network cards. Non-HP network cards use the primitive lpr/lpd protocol so you must add them as a "remote" printer (in SAM terminology). You must ask Konica to tell you the internal printer name in order to configure the printer.

Hi Jerry,

Good day to you !!!
As we already know that HP JetDirect is design for working together with HP printers.

But it's not a close opportunity to plug-in a non HP printers with HP JetDirect, all you need to know from the vendor whether the non HP printer work with PCL3 or PCL5 model script. If you cannot get that info, you can try to use 'dumbplot model script for printer' for your Konica bizhubpro 7085.

Hope this information can help you.

You can't use jet direct.

Back at the juf, we had one and used http://www.easyspooler.com to spool it. It was an order of magnitude less expensive than the hp replacement for openspool.

Hi

Does Konica not have an own software.

Otherwise try hppi
Select Spooler Administration
Then
Add Printer to local spooler
Enter the network printername or IP Address:

At this point you may get something like this

The HP Jetadmin utility can ping the device, The problem may be : ...

Do you want to continue?

Select y

You get three choices

Try 2/ Ignore it continue the process

Choose option--

Re: Konica bizhubpro 7085 printer with HP-UX print spooling.

It's important to note that the method of communication (LAN, parallel, serial) is separate from the language and options that a printer uses. hppi is a LAN configuration program that provides special model scripts, one for communication and another for formatting. It will essentially tie the hpnpf program (JetDirect network code) to the lp spooler.

As I mentioned, hppi (and the HP-only product called JetDirect) is a proprietary communication protocol. Printers were never designed to work on a LAN connectin so several methods were developed to translate what is essential a network connection into something that the printer can use. HP pioneered these techniques about 15 years ago, starting with a Novell card, then Appletalk and Microsoft protocols, and finally a TCP/IP style connection. Later, HP developed an external box (the JetDirect EX) with a Centronics-style printer connector on one side and a LAN connection on the other, which allowed non-HP printers to be connected to the network and thus the existence for non-HP printer scripts.

Other manufacturers started creating network cards for their printers but they were incompatible with HP JetDirect protocol, specifically ports 9100-9102 for TCP/IP printing and had to use the simpler Unix protocol for remote printing, lpd/lpr. HP updated the firmware on most of the JetDitrect cards to add this protocol to enlarge the range of systems (mainly Unix and mainframes) that could connect to the JetDirect cards.

So a printer with a LAN card is incompatible with hppi (or the obsolete jetadmin code) because of the proprietary nature of the protocol. When you run hppi, it will state that the printer is not a "network" printer when it really means: "The LAN card is not an HP JetDirect card".

So unless the Konica printer has a parallel (Centronics) cable connected to an HP JetDirect external box, you cannot use the hppi software to add the printer. Use SAM and supply the 3 items: printer queue_name, printer's IP address and the internal name of the printer as defined by the Konica's LAN card. Also make sure you check the BSD option to provide BSD jobID numbers (the default is SysV jobIDs).

Pete: The link provided implies that hppi will connect to a non-HP network card. But to do this, the software would have to switch gears and add the printer as a remote printer, like a remote printer connected to an NT server or some other print server. One of the problems associated with all remote printing in HP-UX is that lpr/lpd is a BSD protocol and as such, has no method to pass the -o options from the lp command (like -oduplex or -olandscape) to a remote printer. This usually requires some extra sysadmin work to filter print jobs before sending them to a remote printer.

Re: Konica bizhubpro 7085 printer with HP-UX print spooling.

No go on any of your inputs.

Minolta told me they do not support HP-UX
network print spooling.

Pete, the link was for adding a Xerox.
Although I tried it. It would not let me run

# addqueue -i 9998 -q p00504_2 -h p00504.irtx.cs.na.baesystems.com -b off
usages: addqueue [-c class] [-d] [-i printerID] -q queue -h hostname [-p port]
addqueue -l

I tried running hppi and doing the skip,
add dumbplot, 4si, etc... jobs just sit
in queue.

It is pingable and I can print to it when
using sam. But -olandscape, etc options
are not available.
