Lan Card config - Is this right.

Lan Card config - Is this right.

I have 2 servers, each have 2 nics for the data, primary and standby, and both have a 3rd nic for the heartbeat only. Here is the network section of my config file.

# Lan0 is main HeartBeat Network
# Lan1 is main Data Network
# Lan2 is Backup Data Network

NODE_NAME hp50a
NETWORK_INTERFACE lan0
HEARTBEAT_IP 192.168.46.11
NETWORK_INTERFACE lan1
HEARTBEAT_IP 10.46.10.11
NETWORK_INTERFACE lan2

When I pull out both NIC cards on nodeB, nothing happens. Is this normal behaviour or am I missing something. My assumption would be if I loose my primary and seconday nic cards and only have my heartbeat network left that the boxes would try and reform a new cluster. Any help is apprciated.

Thanks

Steve

Re: Lan Card config - Is this right.

What do you mean by nothing happens?
what do the syslogs on each node say?
is the cluster running at the time you pull cables?
do you have a package configured that is using one of the lans, i.e. hasthe subnet configured to be mnonitored?
what version of SG?

Re: Lan Card config - Is this right.

They won't reform a new cluster because:

1.- Both nodes can talk to each other (main heartbeat is up)
2.- No external lan resource is available, so switching packages is nonsense (I suppose you have EMs configured to monitor cluster resources)

Re: Lan Card config - Is this right.

Hi Steve

You did not indicate which LANs were failed?

Assuming they were both active LANs, the detail you provided indicates that heartbeat is transmitted on 2 active LANs... hence, no cluster reformation will take place because the standby takes over for one of the heartbeat LANs.

If SUBNET is monitored for packages dependent on the data LAN, that package would fail if the STBY LAN took over for the dedicated HB LAN.

Have a look at the syslog.log - it captures lan failure/recovery and standby LAN takeover.
