Release HP-UX 11i Version 2 Operating System release identifier B 11.23 is the latest version for non-itanium (PA RISC) and it also works on Itanium

I thought that 11.23PI (Sept 2004 and May 2005) had a common code base for both pa-risc and Itanium, hence the PI. Maybe SEP can help us better understand the distinction between 11.3x and 11.23PI.

I executed the command "uname -a" and got the below output:-

How to figure out it is 11i or not ?

11.11 is 11i family only.

11.22 is 11i.v1.6
11.23 is 11i.v2

Check this as,

# swlist | grep -i oper
HPUX11i-OE B.11.11.0412 HP-UX 11i Operating Environment Component

will say that,

os is 11i or not.

11.11 - 11i Operating Environment
11.20 - 11iv1.5 Operating Environment
11.22 - 11iv1.6 Operating Environment
11.23 - 11iv2 Operating Environment

Yes it has got common code base and can be installed on both IA and PA machine.

They have named this versions as:

HPUX 11.23 v2 Update 1
HPUX 11.23 v2 Update 2

The term "11i" is used for a family of releases:

11.11 -> 11i version 1
11.20 -> 11i version 1.5
11.22 -> 11i version 1.6
11.23 -> ii1 version 2

Only 11.11 and 11.23 are currently supported. 11.20 and 11.22 were transitional releases until 11.23 appeared. Release 11.23 brins common source code for the PA-RISC and Itanium architecture lines.

If we upgrade our boxes to HP-UX 11.30; will it support our existing applications running on 11.11i ?

Can anyone suggest any extra desirable features of 11.30?

We have PA-RISC boxes and don't use Itanium processors.

11.30? Where did you hear about HP-UX 11.30? As far as I know that is not released yet.

Shiv, there is no 11.30 available yet from HP. If you have PA-RISC servers, you can install 11iV2 (11.23), the latest OS release from HP.

Well there will be something after 11.23, called by marketing 11i v3, due sometime next year hopefully. Whether it will be called 11.30 or 11.31 is a small point. I am sure that it will have some nice features, but I would like to see most HP-UX users get to at least 11.11 before the end of support for 11.0 in Dec. 2006. I expect that 11i v3 will be able to take greater advantage of Montecito (Itanium), so I wouldn't get too excited about it for pa-risc. It will be a long time before the majority of pa-risc customers can get to 11.23.

There are more dynamic tunable kernel parameters in 11.23 than 11.11 so you can do more tuning without rebooting. There are the new secure resource partitions and additional ServiceGuard offering with the Veritas Cluster File system in 11.23. All thing considered it is a significant improvement, but you still have to make sure all your applications are supported in the 11.23 environment whether on pa-risc or Itanium. Even if they still run, you probably want the application vendor's support.

I have heard that 11.31 project is dropped ? I am not sure it is true or false, but 11.31 had some good features like Clustering from TruUnix64.. It was rock solid when we ran test suites.
