Re: launch CDE from xterm
It's been a while since I did any xterm work but I found some documentation.
Default operation on power-up of the xterm:
1. Display the boot screen (copyright, etc.)
2. Send out a boot request on the LAN. This boot request would be answered by a server running bootp if /etc/bootptab has been configured with your xstation's network config. Otherwise you have to configure the xstation to use a ROM server.
3. Send out an xdmcp request asking the server to send a login screen.
So, you need bootp running on a server or we need to set up a ROM based server. In order to get bootp running, you have to install Netstation software.
How are we doing? Does any of this fit you situation?

Re: launch CDE from xterm
If this were an Xterminal or X emulation s/w capable of supporting an X bitmapped display aka Xserver the answer would be yes.
think about vnc see http://www.csun.edu/~swalton/VNC/
and ttp://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/
its free and should work in your env.

Re: launch CDE from xterm
thanks for all the replies :)
Bummer :(
I am using WinAxe (http://www.xwinpro.com/x-windows-on-windows.html) to telnet in to my system and then launch an xterm. I can run sam and xstm in gui mode. I thought I would just be able to call up a CDE login screeen. I also sometimes use IVT Telnet (freeware) and get gui when installing software.
I guess I will try VNC, any tips from anyone who has used it before?

SolutionBasically - you want to run your window manager from HP-UX, displaying on the PC.
Good luck,

Re: launch CDE from xterm
You can use winaxe too, to do this! There is an Xserver settings panel, from where you can broadcast or make direct contact with an X server.
Good luck

Re: launch CDE from xterm
Think (no hpux at home) you have to cp /usr/dt/config/Xaccess to /etc/dt/config/Xaccess and edit the file here.
The syntax you need will be in this file.
Hope it helps.
