Legato

I'm getting the same error:
Legato Storage Manager media: (waiting) backup to pool 'Default' waiting for 1 writable backup tape(s)

But we DO have Legato Store Manager, any help about verifying what is missing and/or how to change it, will be appreciated.

Re: Legato

Check your backups. There is one somewhere that is trying to go to the a tape within the "DEFAULT" tape pool.

Cancel that backup and the messages will disappear.

Re: Legato

Or load a tape onto the tape drive/library that you have and scratch it.
Legato is waiting for a tape.

In legato Networker, you would goto the Media menu and choose Label Media to scratch the tape.

Re: Legato

Javier,

It is very likely that you have a version of Legato Networker bundled with Oracle (8.x or 7.x) - and is called LSM (or Legato Storage Manager). If you are not actively using it, then just do nsr_shutdown or simply find the rc script in /sbin/init.d/ (it is probably named networker .. so do "./networker stop"). Or totallly disable it by commenting its corresponding rc script link in /sbin/rc2.d/S??networker.

But if you do use LSM, then that means it is waiting for a tape on whatever tape drive (on the Default backup pool).

Re: Legato

Hi,

When you install Oracle the Legato software is installed like a default backup tool, you can shutdown the legato daemon by:
# nsr_shutdown
and answer "Yes"

then message disapear until next box reboot. To remove definitively the Legato Storage tool is a hard task that recomend you contact with an Oracle Support Metalink Analyst.

Other definive ways are:
1)Go in to runInstaller under your Oracle bin directory, choose remove packages and select Legato Storage Manager and remove it.
2)Remove the start and stop script in /sbin/rc2.d/S900networker and /sbin/rc0.d/K200networker

Re: Legato

Legato keeps a database of your backups. You can see the database when you check the volumes.

When you keep a database on your disk of your database backups, the obivous question becomes "How do I restore my backups if the database containing my backup information is gone?"

Legato solves this problem by automatically backing up the database of backups to tape at 3:33AM by default. So, the tape that it is asking for is a tape for its private database backup. It will insist on writing a report to your printer too.

You can go to group control and stop it from saving your backup sets. I don't recommend that. In 5 years, I've had the Legato database get corrupted on me twice. If you have the legato database on tape, there is a scanner program that will rebuild it on disk.

Without the Legato database on disk, your RMAN tapes become interesting and compact paper weights. Since most restores are unplanned and are generally started right after something nasty has happened, you don't want to discover that your backup is bad at that point.

Leave a tape mounted, labeled and in the drive. Kick your RMAN backup before 3:33AM or whatever time you have it set the group backup set. Then, you will get the Legato database at the end of the RMAN backup and should you loose your production database and the Legato database you are not toast. The restore may take alittle longer, but you will be able to restore.

Re: Legato

If you are not wanting to use Legato, disabling like stated above will work. Also you can use swremove to remove the software as well.
