Logical Partitioning on HP-UX 11

I have got two N4000 boxes running MC/SG and OPS. Can I partition these boxes without reinstalling the current OS?
(I know that i will have to install a new copy of the OS on the new 'server')

Are you talking about "Virtual partitioning"? Virtual Partitioning is really just a depot install - some patches and and some new software.

Hi Neale,

I think what you want to do is supported on superdome only.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I think virtual partitioning is what I meant.
Will Virtual Partitioning allow me to logically split the server into two?
Is it a payable extra or is it a standard HP-UX feature?

Re: Logical Partitioning on HP-UX 11

Neale,

If you are talking about "Virtual Partitioning", each partition has it's own boot device and no partition may share an IO device (at the card level) of another. I run 6 partitions on my N4000, and it works like a champ! Also, it's not wise to have multi-partitions on an N-class fail over to another partition on the same physical server, you really want to failover to another N-class.

Re: Logical Partitioning on HP-UX 11

For TWO partitons, it is (will be?)"standard" with some restrictions, of which I don't think they have published everything yet. I've been running it for almost a year now, with very little problems, other than the normal beta testing stuff.

You would need to install another copy of the OS onto disks that are different from the current disks - They have to be external disks for the second, third, .... partitions.

The first partition owns ALL internal devices!!! IO cards can not be shared among different partitions.

The instructions, of which I don't think are finalized yet, have a section on how to create partitions for MCSG. Contact your local HP rep for details.
