ls -alR consuming lot of cpu

Hi All,
I know it is a long listing but I am facing this problem
in Superdome.
In top it shows like this
PID USERNAME PRI NI SIZE RES STATE TIME %WCPU %CPU COMMA
14239 root 222 20 5480K 3768K run 0:16 18.96 18.51 ls

The cpu usage depends upon what else the system is doing, if it is quiet then your ls command will be given this power.

It could also be an indication of disk problems.

It is an "It depends" answer.

Paula,
you are correct but in this case this server running 1.2TB(EMC disk) informix database with SAP R/3 Application with 900 + users.
That was my concern.

On some of our servers, we can get ls at the top taking up a lot of cpu, especially if the directory has a lot of files in it.

Is it causing a problem at all ?

Yes lots of file will do this, but is this a new occurance?

If so and files are about the same then start looking at disk, sar, glance, syslog dmesg etc.

If you have tusc then attach to the pid and see what it is doing.
