LVM Config Error on bootup HPux 11.0

Hi All,

We have a situation here: HP9000 - K-Class with bootable AutoRaid ( ArmServer runing on system).
AutoRaid got shutdown before unix was shutdown by error!.
Now System does not bootup.
Errors after the initial hpux startup from ISL>
with Activation of Root VG failed either No physical Volumes are attached or No Valid VGDA's on the physical Volume hence could not Configure the root VG and the system halts - panics.

Cannot go into single user mode or maintenence mode - same error repeated.
Unfortuntely No Ignite backup - it is non-production m/c.

We have an internal disk with HPUX 11.0 which is bootable and we can see all the AutoRaid configured Logical Devices and can vgimport and mount them on the internal disk, including /stand and /root LV.

Is there anyway of recovering the system ( eg. VGDA if corrupt).

Any HELP we be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Suri,

The best you could do at this time is to boot the system through recovery CD and see if you can access the disks. If so, there is a process to recover the VGDA with lvlnboot commands. Since you could be able to mount /stand and /rootLV, I guess you have the data and only the BDRA is the issue. Try it. You will find the documentation with the recovery CD or at docs.hp.com site.

There has obviously been damage to your system due to the way it was shut down.

I would break out my last make_tape_recoveryu tape and be prepared to boot off of it.

You probably need to restore vg00. You probably don't want to restore any other volume groups to start.

The Core OS has a recovery mode which might be able to put your system back together. I doubt it because you can't boot into single user mode.

You might wish to try lvm mode.

hpux -lm

Since you don't have an Ignite recovery tape, I would recommend Sri's method of using the Recovery CD and try recreating your VG defenitions from it. It should be successful since you cannot see any issues on the root file systems when mounted.

If that fails and if your internal disk (bootable 11.00) is an exact replica of your lost disk, then mirror it or 'dd' it to the AutoRAID disk.
