make_dvd_recovery ???

Now that there are writable DVDs on HPUX servers, is there a way to do a make_tape_recovery to a DVD.

I've seen the threads about building a bootable DVD from an ignite server, but I'm wondering if there is a way, with a single server, to simply create the DVD like you can with a tape drive. HPUX 11.11

Thanks

Re: make_dvd_recovery ???

There is a general procedure for making bootable cd's in the Ignite guides. Although my copy of that manual (paper from the education center) involves using a cd-writer on a pc (thats what was available then), I would think the procedure would work for a DVD.

Re: make_dvd_recovery ???

Hi,

Looks like some new documentation has been released as part of Chapter 8 of the Dec 2004 edition of Ignite-UX administration guide (MPN B2355-90872).

I would have looked at the doc and posted a link, but seems like the hp docs site is down at present.

Here is the link to hp doc site http://docs.hp.com unless they are changing it and that is the reason i cannot get to it.

Hope this helps.

Re: make_dvd_recovery ???

Thanks for the links to the new ignite guide. I read through chapter 8 and it looks like there is no make_tape_recovery like utility to create DVDs.

The information info on using an ignite server to create a bootable DVD looks good but much more difficult than simply using make_tape_recovery.

If someone knows if HP is planning to add this capability in the near future, please let me know. I'll leave the thread open for a while.

Thanks.

Re: make_dvd_recovery ???

I've asked for "make_cd_recovery" for a long time already. But better even would be "make_iso_recovery", with an option to create a bootable CD or a bootable DVD ISO image, and then use whatever writer available to you

I have several servers, and all of them have a CD and/or DVD. None of them have a DVD writer, one of them has a CD writer (that we never used for writing), one of them has a DLT tape, one has a DDS-2 tape, and one has a DDS-4 tape, so you see that I would *love* to have a "make_iso_recovery" and write that image to a CD or DVD. A command like that would also be easily extendable to make dual layer DVD's or maybe even more sophisticated media in the (near) future.

Re: make_dvd_recovery ???

I have taken our golden Ignite image that we download over the network and modified the configuration to work as a bootable CD.

I don't see why you couldn't take a make_net_recovery image and place it onto a DVD-R. The conversion process could even be scripted.

I've also created bootable CDs to connect to our Ignite server, but has anybody ever created a bootable DVD for HP servers? Which media should be used, DVD-R or DVD+R?

Re: make_dvd_recovery ???

ok!

Now i have translated this todo list:
My collegue has but a lot of research and time into this:

-Put all config files on a server u can reach e.g hpignite:/root/iso-config.
-copy them to /iso on the server u are gonna create the image of (this server is called image), This way it will be on the DVD

##Manually work:
image:/ # lvcreate -L 1900 -n lvol3 vg_image
image:/ # newfs -F hfs -f 2048 /dev/vg00/rlvol3
image:/ # mkdir /iso
image:/ # mount /dev/vg_image/lvol3 /iso
image:/ # mount -o largefiles /dev/vg_image/lvol2 /image #
##Lvol2 IS A REGULAR FILESYSTEM
image:/image #timex /opt/ignite/data/scripts/make_sys_image -l 2 -f /image/exclude -d /iso -s local
image:/iso #/opt/ignite/lbin/archive_impact -t -g /iso/image.gz
## Replace the impact-lines in core11.cfg with the output from archive_imapact.
image:/iso #instl_adm -T -f core11.cfg
image:/iso #instl_adm -T -f config
image:/iso #make_medialif -f /iso/core11.cfg -f /iso/config -l /image/lifvol
image:/tmp #instl_adm -F /image/lifvol -f /iso/cfg
image:/tmp #umount /iso
image:/tmp #dd if=/dev/vg_image/rlvol3 of=/image/image1.iso bs=1024k
image:/tmp #/opt/ignite/lbin/instl_combine -F /image/lifvol -C /image/image1.iso

## To test the image:
image:/tmp #dd if=/image/image1.iso of=/dev/rdsk/c6t1d0 bs=1024k
## Where c6t1d0 is a disk NOT in use

Boot from this disk c6t1d0 - (interrupt the boot secuence -> SEArch -> Choose the right disk)

If OK: Burn image1.iso to DVD (ONLY DVD-R will work)

##Afterwork - post-script.
1) Touch /var/adm/wtmp
2) put sticky-bit on tmp and /var/tmp
3) create a new /etc/hosts
4) Generate new ssh-keys (if ssh is used)
5) create new /stand/bootconf
6) edit /etc/issue.
7) Correct netconf with correct gateways.
8) Mirror systemdisks.

Hope this will help u out!

Re: make_dvd_recovery ???

I looks like I can be done but only with a lot of work. Too bad you cannot redirect the outpot from make_tape_recovery to a disk
[make_tape_recovery -A -a /dev/vg02/rlvol12]
and then copy that to a DVD.

Thanks to all who replied.
