Migrating to HP-UX 11

Hello ! Happy New Year for all of you !!!
I think my question will be the latest one of the century, but I hope it will be the first to be answered next year :-))

I still have my production system running
HP-UX 10.20. But I need to migrate from ORACLE 8.0.5 to 8.1.6 and it requires HP-UX 11.

My system is running fine on 10.20 and I have very few informations about sites running
HP-UX 11.

What about you? Have you already migrated ? Have you experienced any problem ?

Best regards.

Re: Migrating to HP-UX 11

Hello, Berlene ! Thanks for your attention ! I?ve been looking for this kind of document but I couldn?t find it !!!

But, specially, I want to know about the experiences you have with the new version. My boss asked me about the number of sites using this version, if this version is stable, etc etc.

May I have your opinion ??

Thank you again,

Re: Migrating to HP-UX 11

Strongly consider cold-install rather than an upgrade. There are a lot of undocumented steps needed to get a truly clean upgrade (removing of old 10.20 patch archives, removing any non-standard networking, and so on. Most sysadmins that have tried upgrades have eventually cold-installed.

The minimum space needed in / is 100 megs and since most / directories are only 100 megs total, this requires a new layout of the 10.20 vg00 filesystems. Oracle recommends cold install due to some problems with system library migration. It's a good idea to inventory all applications you are running in addition to Oracle and verify that they run on 11.0 64 bit.

From a sysadmin point of view, 11.0 has little differences. Be sure to install the 64 bit version. If your computer does not support 64 bits, then the new version of Oracle may not work--you won't be able to take advantage of any RAM beyond 3.75 megs.

Re: Migrating to HP-UX 11

Hello, Bill !

Do you know if D-230 servers supports 64 bits?
What about K-250 servers ?

Do I have HP-UX 11.0 / 32 bits ?

By the ORACLE side, I have both 8.1.6/32 or 8.1.6/64. I don?t think it will be a problem, do you ?

Re: Migrating to HP-UX 11

Hi,

Check the following:

http://my1.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,1150,0x26b814a24fd1d4118fef0090279cd0f9!0,00.html

If you have a hp-ux 11.X system check in the following file:
/etc/.supported_bits

The latest file was updated via patch PHCO_20894

The D230 supports only 32-bit

All the best

Re: Migrating to HP-UX 11

Hi,

9000/802/K250 support 32 and 64 bits.

I don't have any information about D230 but my D270 et D370 are running HP-UX 11 64 bits.

When I upgraded my D class, I had to remove EISA cards and drivers : they are not 64 bits compliant.

Regards,

Patrice.

Re: Migrating to HP-UX 11

Leila,

Forgot to mention.
Also check with HP, if the firmware level is oke, before installing hp-ux 11.X on the D and K-class.

Re: Migrating to HP-UX 11

#getconf KERNEL_BITS will also tell you if you are 32 or 64 bits.

Re: Migrating to HP-UX 11

I strongly agree with Bill on doing a cold install rather than an upgrade. It is much cleaner. Also, as Darrel said have HP check the firmware.
How many systems do you have to upgrade and do you have a test system you can practice the upgrade on? If you have more than 3 or 4 systems you may want to setup an Ignite server and run the installs from there. Once you have created a UX 11 image with all the patches the install goes very quickly from an Ignite server. I did 6 systems in less than 3 hours earlier this year. Then you also have a depot for future patches.
Sorry I can't give you many details on it. An HP ASE created mine.

Hi:

Do a search within this Forum for keyword matches like "Oracle and 11.0" and "10.20 and 11.0" and you will find a wealth of pointers. Below, are several threads to help you begin your planning:

Re: Migrating to HP-UX 11

For everyone, I've attached a .settings file which is used by the compilers to determine 32 and 64 bit capability.

The requirement is that the hardware uses a PA-8000 procssor. New boxes are now 64-bit only (cannot load 10.20 at all) but HP-UX is backward compatible for 32 bit programs.

Re: Migrating to HP-UX 11

Hi,
Last year,in November, we have migrated to Unix-11, with N-class servers. The responce and the features are definitely better. My users are also happy at it. During migration, there may be some problems....but afterwards
life is really more peaceful..(touchwood)...;-))
