mission critical backup software

Hi,

Years back i used to observe many enterprises using Legato Networker backup software.

Is this product still a world leader in backup technology for mission critical backup ?

Thanks,
Shiv

Re: mission critical backup software

Yes, Networker is still one of the big backup products available. Legato was bought by EMC within the last year or two, so it is now EMC Networker.

Hi Shiv,

Legato Networker is leader in backup market without any doubts. You can check this for more information : http://software.emc.com/products/software_az/networker.htm?hlnav=T

Re: mission critical backup software

For my money, give me HP OpenView Data Protector. The product itself is probably equivalent to Networker, but the support is far, far superior. I used to use Networker and loved it but could not stand the lousy support.

Re: mission critical backup software

yes. Pete told is right.

u can see that, from the ITRC forums home page, "Active forums" list, HPUX, and NNM, OVO and Data protector stands in good position.

see, HPUX is a very good OS. At times, we need some support. [Thanks to ITRC and its active UNIX guru's.]

Re: mission critical backup software

I've used both Legato and OmniBack/Data Protector over the years and the features are comparable. My preference these days is Data Protector. At one time Legato's performance was a little better and OB2's pre/post exec features were a little better but things are pretty much a dead heat now.

If you have many clients, one of the things you should examine are differences in the way the products are licensed; that can make a huge difference when the product is purchased and in ongoing support costs.

However, the best advice I can give you is to absolutely, positively assume that the backups don't work. You then do test restores to a Sandbox and if you application successfully functions and then you can be pleasantly surprised when the product works just as advertised. The time you absolutely, positively don't want to find out if the product or your backup procedures are flawed is when you must do a "for real" restore.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: mission critical backup software

Shalom,

We use Legato at NDS and are very happy with it.

I've used Veritas Netbackup at my prior place and it worked but since we did not test restore recovery strategy our fast backup method led to single thread restore of 2 TB of data.

That sucked.

I've used the predecessors to the DP products and they worked well for us as well.

I recommend that you do in addition to all else a full DR restore test outside your organization. That way you will be able to guage the complexities of a recovery.

Good Luck,

Re: mission critical backup software

Shiv -
I can share SEP's pain in a single thread restore using Veritas Netbackup DataCenter.
That was before we realized the process to multithread and maintain backup profiles and scripts to account for multithreaded backup/restores.
Our experience with Veritas has been a good one with excellent support.
Of course, as another poster noted, licensing can be the determining factor.
If you or your client have multitiudes of HP-UX or Windoze machine you want to run Netbackup on, the cost factor may make you look at another product.
I have not experience, pricing or otherwise, with Legato, Tivoli, Omniback etc.

Best of luck on your decision making.
