monitoring tools

Hi,

I'm looking for suggestions on what the most user friendly monitoring tools for HP-UX are.

Monnitoring to show system resource activity and issue alerts if there is a problem.

We use BMC Patrol to monitor our systems. From my experience, it's been easy to use and configure, and you can also write your own modules to add in if you have to, using either the internal language (PSL), or by calling unix scripts etc.

Just check for the openview tools from HP.

You are just monitoring the system rsources then you can use openview-IT operations .

NNM is used for network management.

Also perfview can be integrated with ITO for monitoring resources and applications.

I've used both openview and BMC products and for montoring I'd vote for BMC. If you want to integrate other tools into an overall package then openview is better.

Openview is the overall for a tool like glance. Openview however is the overall management for many modules.
Please look at logsurfer for reading your syslog.log file !! It's a very handy tool that can help you out when systems have problems, you can set them up to mail a pattern matching line as an error to any e-mail adress you set up.
It's for free and easy to install. I have all the needed info and config, just let me know if you're interested.

It depends on how large your Infrastructure Is and how deep your pockets are. IMHO, practically all Commercial tools derive their performance stats from UNIX tools and kernel stats that any experienced admin can extract information from.. The packaged monitoring tools just make it easier and a lot friendlier to gather, store, report and web present the stats. Here are my list:

HOMEGROWN:
Perl/Shell Code to extract SAR, IOSTAT, VMSTAT, etc. data and use Open Source Tools to Archive them (ie. MRTG, RRDtool to name a few.). If you cannot write your own, hook up with someone who has written up something.

FREEWARE/OPEN-SOURCE SUITES/PACKAGES:
Big Brother (www.bb4.com), SarGe, RRDtool, etc.

COMMERCIAL TOOL$:
CA Unicenter, HP OpenView, Tivoli, GlancePlus/PerfView, BMC Patrol Suite, Landmark...
