Moving 1 Server to another Location

Hi All

moving 1 fully-loaded server to another location.

I did these changes:
Changed IP Address in /etc/hosts
and /etc/rc.config.d/netconf
IP_ADDRESS[0]="192.1.12.254"
BROADCAST_ADDRESS[0]="192.1.12.255"
ROUTE_GATEWAY[1]="192.1.12.1"

Do I have to do anything before move, any pre-cautions.

After moving when i power up, will everything be OK.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Moving 1 Server to another Location

Hi Basheer,

Create two sets of ignite tapes (plus normal backup), send one set with the server and keep one set in your office.

Kind regards,

Re: Moving 1 Server to another Location

Hi,

I would be sure to get a couple of good tape backups, and also two good Ignite-UX backups. Every system we have moved has come up successfully, but I used to drive trucks for a living and I know how things get shipped sometimes. :)

If the networking environment in the second location is correct, you should be all right. Its important to check with network administration about this.

Just in case you damage the system in transit, make sure its backed up a few times.

Re: Moving 1 Server to another Location

You might also check /etc/resolv.conf.

Also, if you have any NFS mounts or any other exteral hardware that will be different at the new site.

Probably not an issue, but make sure your hostname/ip are unique.

If you have any backup servers or other external devices you send data to, make sure that is all taken care of as well.

Re: Moving 1 Server to another Location

If your server is behind a firewall and users access via WAN, make sure that your firewall/VPN servers are configured to let the new server/ports for allowed users.

Here is certain physical things you have to be careful other than the system/network configurations.

Mark/identify all network/fiber/scsi cables and their corresponding ports on the system.
Also if you have disk shelfs, make sure they are secured safely.

And then, finally be prepared for some unexpected thigs :), this happens a lot when you move a working system...

Re: Moving 1 Server to another Location

If you have time, do a site inspection. You need to make sure that the environment your moving the system to has:

adequate air conditioning
network is prepared (plug in a laptop and make sure the network is accessible.
You have the right power facilities for the server/cabinet
If you have external disk, make sure that you have vgexport mapfiles stored somewhere, as well as good backups. These are your lifeblood.
