My CDE won't go further than the login screen

I'm new to hp-ux and recently got a c100 HP9000 box running hp-ux 11. CDE will not get further than the login screen. It accepts root as the username and the password but just returns to the login screen after the information is entered. I know the password is correct as I can get in through a command line session. I have not configured networking yet but plan to do so and have read that this may be a problem with CDE.

Any help appreciated.

yes,you are right.

These problems arise when there are name resolution problems.

Adding the server to the network should resolve the problem.

To confirm this you can run
/usr/contrib/bin/X11/dr_dt and check the /var/dt/Xerrors to know the reason for the problem of CDE.

Revert

you have to configure network part that ip,dns,hostname and so on

# nslookup hostname and ip

and then you will get CDE settion normally, i guess.

almost CDE's problems are depend on network parts in my experience.

you still have a problem.

# dr_dt

and see the some logs under ./dtlogin in your home directory.

Check the DISPLAY variable in the user profile(probably .profile)

If its not set to the IP of the user workstation(assuming a X Windows client, running on a remote pc), this problem will occur.
