N4000

Can an N4000 server (running HP-UX 11.0) run in 32 bit mode...or is 64 bit mode the only option?

Thanks....

Re: N4000

Hi,

Why do you want the N4000 max 32GB of memory to run an 32 bits OS. You can not adress it with 32 bits O.S. and 64 bits OS should work file with 32bit applications.

Re: N4000

Hi Scott:

I've not tried the 32-bit but the OS Support matrix indicates that 64-bit is your only option.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: N4000

Vri, we want to use a 32bit application on that
box, but aren't sure if it'll work or if we'll have to upgrade to a 64 bit version of the app.
We have to take COBOL into consideration as well.

Clay, where can I see that OS support matrix?

Thanks for both responses.

Re: N4000

Hi Scott,

N4000 Supports only 64 Bit 11.0/11i.

Take a look at the thread below for more info.

hope this helps.

Re: N4000

Hi,

I guess it's 64....You can run your 32bit applications on 64b without any problem..

Thanks Sanjay.

Does anyone know if we can run and compile 32bit microfocus cobol on a 64bit OS machine?

Re: N4000

Hi Scott:

If you are running 11.x, then you can look up the model you are interested in knowing about in '/etc/.supported_bits'. For the N-class and L-class servers, for instance, you will see a "64" in the column next to the model. This denotes 64-bit only. Compare this to something like the K- or D-class servers, where you can run either 32-bit or 64-bit kernels (for many models). There, you will see the notation "32/64".

Regards!

Re: N4000

Hi:

Though I can hardly speak COBOL (and don't want to), I have ported, compiled, and executed the 32-bit MicroFocus COBOL on 64-bit 11x. The 10.20 executables will also run without change.

Re: N4000

That's good news Clay.
Where can I get an official statement from HP stating same?

Thanks to everyone for the responses!

Re: N4000

Scott,

I ported over 500 MF cobol programs from 10.20 to 11i without recompiling anything! I did have to relink the libraries (we do some hokey stuff).

And it will even be better when we recompile!

Re: N4000

Hi,

You probably won't get any "official"
statement from HP unless it is HP's own
software. You will find that most if
not all 32 bit applications will run
on 64 bits systems (I haven't seen one
yet), they will just run in 32 bit mode.
The system itself cannot run in 32 bit
mode as the processors were designed for
64 only. Try approaching your software
vendor for this statement if required.
