National Language Support

I am running HP-UX 11.00
Two questions:

1. I want to define a Brazilian Portugese locale, but I do not see any pt_BR.*.src files in /usr/lib/nls/loc/src, so I cannot successfully run the localedef command. Does a Brazilian Portugese locale source file exist for HP-UX, and how can I get it?

2. Using locale ja_JP.eucJP, When I attempt to execute an iconv_open with "from" codepage utf8 and "to" code page eucJP, the iconv_open fails with errno 22 (EINVAL) which means "The conversion specified by the fromcode and tocode is not supported, or the table or method specified in the configuration file could not be read or loaded correctly. This error will also occur if the configuration file itself is faulty." The following line is from the configuration file (/usr/lib/nls/iconv/config.iconv):

utf8 eucJP ucs2=eucJP lutf8hp.sl -

The configuration file doesn't appear to be faulty. The lutf8hp.sl is specified for conversions to iso88591 as well, which are working (e.g. the iconv_open works for utf8 to de_DE.iso88591).

It seems that any Asian language I try (Japanese, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Korean) causes iconv_open to fail, but any European language (German, French, Italian, Spanish, English) works fine.

What do I need to fix? Or is this "just the way it is?"

Re: National Language Support

1) There is no Portuguese localization (Brazil or Portugal) for HP-UX. There has not been a demand for this due to a very small market in Portugal and (until recently) a closed market in Brazil.

The Portuguese locale has been defined and is supported (pt_PT.roman8 and
pt_PT.iso88591), but I can't find any evidence that a complete localization exists for HP-UX.

Locale -a will list all available locales on the system.

2) contact your local HP Response centre : I think this is part of a known issue : ref JAGad33361, reported only a few weeks back. I maybe wrong but if it is is needs reporting/checking out as I don't beleive there is yet a fix.
