Need more info about some running process.

Hi All,

I am new to HP-UX and just now joined in new project.

We are running HP-UX 11.00 on 9000/800/N4000-75.

We are planning to reboot that server very soon.

Before going to reboot I would like to check running process on that server.

I have found some following process running.

The above process look like something related to printer.

As of I know we dont have connected any printers directly to this server.


My question is:

1)what is the exact purpose of each above process?

2)How many of above process will come up automatically after reboot?

3)Will there be any issues if they are not coming up automatically?

1. the lpsched process Schedules requests taken by lp for printing on printers. This creates a process which runs in the background until lpshut is executed. The activity of the process is recorded in /var/adm/lp/log. Do a man on lpsched, lpshut, and lpstat. It looks like you do have printers configured. You could check /etc/hosts to see if the IP addresses are listed in there.

2. anything that is scheduled through lpsched will persist after a reboot.

3. If you are sure there are no printers in use you can edit /etc/rc.config.d/lp and set the following LP=0 (This prevents a restart of the lp spooler)

Not all printers are directly attached to a server. There are these things called network printers.

The lpsched is the main printer scheduler service. The other processes are actual print jobs being printed. If you got the process listing recently and these have been running since March 11, they are probably hung.

"lpstat -v" will show you the printer queues that have been configured on the server.

"lpstat -o" will show you the status (including any prin jobs) for each queue.

Hi,

/usr/sbin/lpsched is the demon for the printer

if you reboot the box it will automaticly start if not the buy run this command you can restart the lpsched
#/usr/sbin/lpsched

for checking the printer Q in your server type
#lpstat -t
it will "Print all status information"

1. Yes there are many printer queues configured on this server
The ones that have /dev/nul as the device, are queues pointing to JetDirect based printers, the ones that have "remote to" are queues that are pointing to printers on other servers.

To check if they are active, for the jetdirect queues you have to look at each /etc/lp/interface/ and find out what the PERIPH is set to. That's the network address of the printer for this queue.

For the remote queues you have to rely on the administrator of the remote server to tell you.

It appears that most queues may be stale, they have files spooled to be printed from long time ago. Anything that older than a few days is probably not needed.

You have to ask your project collegues about more details on this and what the requirements are for printing in this server.

Hi

At this point, you can test any printer by using the 'hppi' printer administrator. However, I believe for 11.00 instead of hppi you type in 'jetadmin'.

Either will take you to a main menu, you select the diagnostics option, option two I believe for hppi but I'm no longer sure for jetadmin.

Have the printer name, ip address and a test print file. The print file should say something like " TEST PRINTOUT - Please call (your phone) "

(There are no real printer drivers on HP-UX, just model scripts.)

You have a few that say "status: busy", lgplt05. There are also lots of files by lgprime trying to print on emdhq247.

If you don't need these old files, you may want to cancel(1) them.

Yes.

They are all listed.

The ones on emdhq247 have their timestamps.
The remote ones on lgplt05 & CSCHQ102 seems to have a different format.

You can also look at the log to see files that were already printed, /var/adm/lp/log.

If you can get the IP address for printers, you can use the EWS to actually look at the details in the newer printers. Some of the high end MFPs show you what's on their console.
