Hello everyone,
I have a series of HP9000/861 D-Class servers that I wood like to run diskless for use in a manufacturing test situation.
I have been trying to find information on the proper method for booting HPUX from a remote LIF on the network. I have read that the HP9000 does support this action but I am not finding enough detail on the subject.
I am wanting to make a "golden" copy of the OS and store it in a LIF on the network so I can boot several matching machines from the same LIF.
- I am told that I can create remote mount points for user file storage which makes sense but what about the system files...can the boot be configured to mount system files on a remote system as well?
- Will this type of boot be performed from the PDC or the ISL level?
- Do I need a local disk on each machine or can everything be done through the lan connection?
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or if you need more info from me.
Thank you,
Ken

Solution
Support for diskless OS was discontinued after 10.20.
You can boot the D-class from an Ignite-UX server and run a recovery shell. In this shell you would be on a RAM disk. You can start networking and do an NFS mount of your server. You would need to setup filesystem swap /var/paging on the server for the client to use. On the client after you mounted /var/paging you could do
swapon /var/paging/somefile
NOTE: This is not a supported configuration.
