Network Printer Issue

I am unable to ping the printer and o/p of hpnpadmin is "no snmp response".

Ping o/p:
---------------------
# ping hb17
PING hb17.brake.co.uk: 64 byte packets

----hb17.brake.co.uk PING Statistics----
4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

# ping 150.150.70.117
PING 150.150.70.117: 64 byte packets

----150.150.70.117 PING Statistics----
3 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
--------------------

hpnpadmin o/p:
-----------------------------
# hpnpadmin -v hb17
*** Receive NO snmp response!
*** (printer down, cable off, or wrong Get community name?)
-----------------------------

What else can i do to find the cause of
printer down?

Re: Network Printer Issue

Ashish,

You need to enter your community name or lan segment,
which is option 4 on jetadmin main menu. It consists of:

- Ipname : enter ipaddress or printer name from /etc/hosts or
other name service (NIS/DNS).

- Getname : put "public" as the default.

Re: Network Printer Issue

The messages from HPPI utilities are quite cryptic but this is what you will see when you try to use HPPI code to add a non-HP printer, or more accurately, a non-HP network interface to the printer. If this is an HP JetDirect network device, then if the printer is on another network, your router(s) are blocking port 9100 (and perhaps others) traffic.

The term network printer in SAM is a plugin for hppi which only works with HP JetDirect cards.

Re: Network Printer Issue

If you cannot validate the network connectivity ( if it is truely a network based printer) then you need to start the troubleshooting from scratch.

Is printer turned on ? Cables plugged in ? Print test page from printer, does it have an IP assigned, is it correct ? If Jetdirect, print test page from it, check same.

Pings maybe restricted on your network. You will need to get the LAN folks involved. Find a host/router on the same subnet and ping from there. Then work your way backwards.

Re: Network Printer Issue

lpstat -vqname says if the printer is configured as remote(515) or network(9100).

telnet qip port can tell you about the n/w connectivity.

Call the person who can have a close look at the printer physcially. It can be turned off/ offline, n/w dsconnect etc..
