Networker restore error
I am testing a data restore in one my test system and getting the following error:
"recover: Warning: ASDF type 0xa2244 version 48 not recognized
recover: Not enough space"
Any idea ?
The OS is 11.0, backup s/w is Legato Networker 5.5.3. The destination has enough space available.
Thanks!

Re: Networker restore error
The problem might be related to the RAM shortage especially when you try to restore a file from a tape whose index is not available any more. In this case, it makes Legato Networker first try to rebuild the index off the tape and saves the index temporarily in RAM (bad idea). If the tape capacity is high, Legato may require lots of RAM to rebuild the temporary index.
I have seen this happen.

Re: Networker restore error
Hai, I will check that. I do have some other options going on now, and will update once I solved the issue. Any more inputs are welcome ... points will follow.
Thanks,
Shiju

Re: Networker restore error
do you have the same device-type reading the tape? I had comparable trouble on Solaris with a native tape read, because the source tape had been written on DLT7000 and I was restoring on DLT800, and there was a density mismatch in the devicefiles between 7000 and 8000. So instead of using /dev/rmt/1cn (Source on DLT7000) I had to restore with /dev/rmt/0mn (Target on DLT8000) to read with the same density.
Another shot might be to wait until the DLT is recognized by the drive and select a manual "density override" if the tape permits.
I do not know about networker, but I would expect that you somehow can customize the blocksize that is used for the tape. Compare the values for this.
Good luck

Re: Networker restore error
Thanks for the reply. But I am using the same type of device here (DDS2). I tried and checked the configuration files (/nsr/res) about the block size mismatches and found it's using the same on both systems. The differences are on OS version (the backup was taken on 10.20), patch levels, Server type etc. But Legato support doesn't think these changes will cause an error like this.
I am trying a lot of options, but things are little slow as I am busy with other tasks too. I will update if I could figure out the exact reason. Any more inputs are welcome.
thanks and have a great weekend!

Re: Networker restore error
I know it's been almost a year since I left this issue as it was after a long support battle with Legato. We couldn't resolve the issue even with the help of Legato support specialists.
But today, I had no choice since the same error came back during a production server disaster recovery. I am glad that I could resolve it and happy to share the solution here with my friends =)) (Fortunately, I didn't repeat the mistake calling Legato "support" this time!). Here is the solution:
1) Touch 3 files under /nsr/debug directory:
/nsr/debug/noreadv
/nsr/debug/nowritev
/nsr/debug/fragmax
2) noreadv and nowritev files should be 0 in size (empty files)
3) Edit fragmax file and add this entry in it:
2000000000
4) Restart networker/nsr daemons.
I think it's a bug in 5.X and might have been resolved in 6.X
Thanks!

Re: Networker restore error
You've touched on exactly the reason that I now use OmniBack rather than Legato: support.
I'm glad you got through your problem.
