NEW IVM 4.1 Deployemnet Doubts

Hi All,
I need to install HP-UX 11.31 (0903) on BL870C blade server and configure that as a VM host, then needs to install two VM guests one is 11.23 and other is 11.31.

What would be the recommonded OE for VM host and VM guest, We have license for VSE-OE.

Is there any specific requirement , that the VM host should be in BASE-OE

Welcomes your comments

Re: NEW IVM 4.1 Deployemnet Doubts

For the VM host - you should go with VSE-OE unless you need to implment high availability for the VMs using Serviceguard. In that case you should use DCOE.

For the VM guests - whatever you like, as long as you are licensed.

Re: NEW IVM 4.1 Deployemnet Doubts

Shalom,

The VM host can be Base-OE. That is my fast read based on the links provided below.

There have been some reports of difficulties with HP-UX 11.31 0903, so take the time to properly install any patches required and plan to put in the bi-annual patch release scheduled for September release.

I would also dedicate time to testing prior to going live in hopes of finding any pitfalls.

http://docs.hp.com/en/10586/vParsTopTenTips.pdf

That document includes a discussion of requirements and also provides perhaps assistance in migrating from vpar to HPVM

Another possible doc on requirements:

Have there? Can you point me at that? I wasn't aware of any major issues...

That is a vPars Document - I'm sure you meant to link to the equivalent for HPVMs...

http://docs.hp.com/en/9985/TopTenTips2.5.pdf

This doc is probably worth a read as well:

That's for HPVM 4.0 - the poster mentions HPVM 4.1. Release notes for that are here:

Re: NEW IVM 4.1 Deployemnet Doubts

Hi,

For Installation the IVM on BL870C Blade Server 7 configure the VM Guest.

For VM Host You can use the HP-UX Base-OE

For VM Guest As you Like Check the Proper Licensed.

Please Follow the Steps for Creating VM & Installation of the VM.

Perform this steps to create the 2 VMGUEST.

Installation & Configuration of IVM INTEGRITY VIRTUAL MACHINE.

1. Create a virtual network switch

#hpvmnet â c â S vmsw1 â n 1

Where â câ is for create, â Sâ is for the virtual switch name and â nâ is the lan port so in this case it is lan1
Stop and start the vm by:

#cd /sbin/init.d
#./hpvm stop
#./hpvm start

2. Create VM Guest with dedicated processor and memory

#hpvmcreate â P vm00 â c3 â r12G
Or
#hpvmcreate â P vm00 â e30 â r12G

Where â câ is the no of cpu , â eâ is the percentage of cpu and â râ is the amount of memory in GB and â vm00â is the VM Guest

3. Present an OS virtual disk to the VM Guest

#hpvmmodify â P vm00 -a disk:scsi::disk:/dev/rdsk/c2t0d0

(Use raw device in case of scsi device)

As per best practice in case of San LUN create a vg then an lv and map the lv to the VM Guest by following Command

# hpvmmodify â P vm00 -a disk:scsi::lv:/dev/vg01/rlvol1

4. Check the VM Guest resources

#hpvmstatus and #hpvmstatus â r

(It would show all the VM Guests with disks, lans and dvd )

5. Boot the vm Guest and install OS: -

#hpvmconsole -P vm00 â Ffi â c â pc â onâ
Or
#hpvmconsole â P vm00

Then go to CM and type command â PCâ

(This will boot the VM Guest and start the installation, go to advanced installation and provide system
details)

6. Installation reboots the VM Guest twice and then it comes to the login prompt.

7. After the installation is complete unpresent the DVD drive to take out the OS media :

#hpvmmodify â P vm00 -d dvd:scsi::disk:/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0

8. In order to access a VM Guest console from the VM Host: -

# Hpvmconsole â P vm00

This will bring the vm00 (VM Guest) MP menu as follows:-
MP MAIN MENU
CO: Console
CM: Command Menu
CL: Console Log
SL: Show Event Logs
VM: Virtual Machine Menu
HE: Main Help Menu
X: Exit Connection
[vm00] vMP>

9. To switch between VM Host MP and VM Guest MP use cntl+x

10. Procedure to insert and eject DVD from the VM Guest :

type â VMâ from the MP of VM Guest
Then type â inâ to insert or â ejâ to eject.

11.Check the VM status after sucessfully installation & Configuration.

# hpvmstatus â s

Re: NEW IVM 4.1 Deployemnet Doubts

No Points please.

My basis of information is seeing a few ITRC threads of 11.31 VM infrastructure, guest OS having sudden reboot problems.

Subjective measure to be sure. But if you see the same problem two or three times in the forums, it can indicate an issue.

HP probably has much better data. In no way do I question HP's quality control. I'm sure whatever the issue is, there is a patch. I recommend testing to uncover and correct any issues that come down the pike.

I'm always willing to help HP out and push an 11.31 system, if they provide me access to one.

I know you're not SEP, in fact we couldn't ask for a better champion of HP's quality control - you bring it up in many many posts - I was just concerned that there was either an issue or a perception of an issue (either is bad).

I think I now know what you are referring to - here's one of the threads:

http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1354548

This turned out to be a configuration issue - if there's one thing you really have to watch for with a lot of our latest software products, it's getting all the version inter-dependencies right (I happen to think it's something we *could* do better).

So your point about testing is right and I agree completely...

Re: NEW IVM 4.1 Deployemnet Doubts

Thanks for your Helps, Finally i had created
VM Host with HP-UX 11iv3 0903 VSE-OE

and two Guests

VM1:- HP-UX 11iv2 0712 E-OE
VM2:- HP-UX 11iv3 0903 VSE-OE

Its working fine, but i have noticed an issue with guest utility hpvmmgmt.

On VM1:-(11iv2)
It is showing both cpu and memory control

Type Guest Control
====== =============
ram no
cpus yes

But On VM2:- (11iv3)

It is only showing memory, not able to enable or disable the cpu.

Type Guest Control
====== =============
ram no

Please suggest

Re: NEW IVM 4.1 Deployemnet Doubts

First of all, just to comment on the OE for the VM Host, you need VSE-OE, or you do not get the VM software.
For the guest OS, it is up to you, but Base is usually good enough, unless you ar erunning th eVM as a Serviceguard node, then you need the HA-OE

As to your problem, have you installed the guest libraries onto the guests? they are located in /opt/hpvm/guest-images/hpux

Re: NEW IVM 4.1 Deployemnet Doubts

The deployment is completed with VSE-OE
