Actually, here is more complete error messages I'm receiving in the syslog. This may help, I hope.

Re: NFS lookup failed for server amsa-rep: RPC: Timed out

I've seen it when a server I had an NFS mount on went off the network and stayed off the network.

Can you ping it? Is it alive?

Ping the server. If it is alive, and still it is coming try by retsarting the following

#/sbin/init.d/nfs.client stop and then start

Don't give up. Try till success...

yes, the server is alive on the network. there seems to be an issued w/ SAMBA. our users often report problems authenticating to the Samba server to access CIFS data files. could these be related? thanks for your help guys.

Hi Mark,

That error is coming from device major # 205 (hex CD) - which is the tape class.

So I'd be looking at your tape drive - c5t1d0.

Re: NFS lookup failed for server amsa-rep: RPC: Timed out

One thing comes to mind. A duplicate IP address for the NFS server can cause this. As you mention, the SAMBA users also complain about intermittent problems.

A duplicate address, come to think of it is not the only thing. I would start checking with the Network folks and make double sure that the NFS server is properly configured on the LAN. Perhaps a speed, duplex, or autonegotiate problem between the NFS server and it's switch? If it was set to say 100HD and the switch is trying to auto-negotiate it would still respond to pings etc but it would be flakey on the LAN.
If it has wheels or a skirt, you can't afford it.
