NIS master server down

Hi,
I'm pretty new to NIS and wondering what would happen if I shutdown the NIS master server.
I have a NIS master that need downtime for some urgent maintenance but I'm not to sure if the whole domain access will be halted or slave can still serve the access authentication and hosts mapping.

Appreciate your input. Thanks.

Re: NIS master server down

yes, as long as you have at least 1 slave server, your clients bound to the master will rebind to the slave, so as long as you have both master and slaves in the ypservers file. (ypinit -c)

Re: NIS master server down

Will there be other impact to the domain other than map files update ie. push or pull during the shutdown?

thanks.

Re: NIS master server down

Normally, If the master nis server down, the slave will take over as a master. All hosts will map to slave. You can run ypwhich command from hosts to check which server there are mapping.
