NIS -problem
Hey,
We have NIS running on a HP-UX 11.00 machine and we have several other UNIX
machines connecting to it for the user/pass. The problem is, that NIS seems to
drop every now and then without any error message to syslog that I can see.
Also, I get various messages to root account about ypserv and something about
binding and
stuff as follows (warning, rather long) :
----
Can't bind master to send ypclear message to ypserv for map passwd.byname.
can not bind to master for evitech hosts.byname unknown NIS client error code
will use slave copy!
Can't build server list from map "ypservers". Reason: unknown NIS client error
code
Can't bind master to send ypclear message to ypserv for map passwd.byuid.
can not bind to master for evitech hosts.byname unknown NIS client error code
will use slave copy!
Can't build server list from map "ypservers". Reason: unknown NIS client error
code
----
This is caused by a cron while running ypmake. I occationally also get errors
by cron telling me, that
ypxfr or something is not responding. Anyone how
could help me with this?, I'd appreciate lots.
Yours,
Jani Kuituniemi

Re: NIS -problem
Jani
You dont mention is your NIS master a HP or Sun or some other. I will assume
hp. (different problems if you have a sun nis server).
Your NIS master is most likely dropping some of the snmp requests NIS makes.
Its common especially certain times of the day when a high request rate occurs
for instance if multiple backups are going, users are really active...... What
you need to do is to look at the netstat results and see if its dropping
requests.
THe other is to make the NIS slave server as a primary answer, this will take
the load off the master. What else is the master doing ? bootp perhaps, or
printer serving , Openview. Whats your configuration like.
If you have questions after you look at the above, drop me an email.
Regards
Terja
