No display and wont boot up.

No display and wont boot up.

I have a user with a C180 workstation. He has been away for 5 weeks and came back from holiday and switch his workstation on. It turned on and sounded like it was booting but nothing is displayed on the the monitor. It doesn't boot up to CDE, just remains with a blank screen. The monitor is switched on and works fine on other simialr machines. I have changed the graphics card and that still gives the same problem.
On the front of the machine 3 of the four diagnostic LED's are constantly lit, numbers 1,2 and 3. They dont flash.
Anyone got any ideas as to what is wrong? EPROM maybe? What should I be looking for?

Thank you
David

Re: No display and wont boot up.

Hi,

You may perhaps have a faulty system board etc. Consult your HP hardware response centre for assistance.

Hope this helps. Regards.

Re: No display and wont boot up.

ps -ef ?? grep dtlogin is one running ?
Check /var/dt/Xerrors ?

If yes check /usr/dt/config & /etc/dt/config/
for the file Xservers : ensure the last line does not contain a # in front of the *local Local@console entry.

If no dtlogin process running : worth your while creating device files, ensuring ioscan recognises the card :

ie run ioscan ensure graphics device is CLAIMED
run rmsf /dev/*crt*
then ... insf -evd framebuf to recreate them.

still problems : ensure graph3 driver in kernal ?

make sure mouse & keyboard are plugged in not faulty
boot to run-level 2 : run /usr/bin/X11/X :0 ? errors ?

ensure graphics path is set correctly at boottime and that the monitor settings are compatible with the new card ie try different resolution and frequency : again can be set at boot time.

check syslog.log in case this is not a graphics problem, check bdf in case file sytem eg /tmp not at 100 %

Re: No display and wont boot up.

Hi

Certainly sounds like the system board.

If it seems to boot can you telnet to it from another machine and check the logs.

Re: No display and wont boot up.

Cheers for the replies.

I was thinkning system board too.

Alex, sorry I didnt make myself clear, I have no output on the monitor at all when I turn it on, so I cant see a command line prompt or anything and therefore cant type anything in. It doesn't boot up either cause I cant rlogin to it remotely. Oh well, the customer wont be happy at the ??400 hardware response fee then!! :-)

Cheers though.

David.

Re: No display and wont boot up.

David,
Did you ever determine what was your porblem. I am seeing the exact same problem with my HP pavilion 6640c machine. I installed XP and everything worked fine until I tried to install a second HD. I get the HD to spin up, the keboard lights to flash, and the CD beeps, but the motherboard never beeps and I never get the blue screen with the HP logo. Sharing your experience would be valuable.

Thanks

Re: No display and wont boot up.

Hi James,
I don't think David is around or he is reading this anymore. you better start new thread or try same thing.

looks like you have some scsi problem because you problem start after you add another HD. check you cable and terminator.
