Be default, they are kept encrypted in /etc/passwd

There is a depot for Shadow Passwords downloadable from http://software.hp.com that will convert your system to use /etc/shadow.

If you were wanting additional security you could convert the system to "trusted mode".

All the users are in the /etc/password file. The encrypted password is in the 2nd field in the file.

Yes, if you have not activated the Trusted mode the passwords are encrypted into the /etc/passwd file. With trusted mode, the passwords and settings are separated in a database under the /tcb directory. If you want to convert to trusted mode you can do it by executing /usr/lbin/tsconvert or through SAM too.

the /r/ is the fist leter from the user.
