NT print server

Hi,
can anybody give me the steps how to configure a NT print server.
I mean I want to respool the print job from hp-ux to a nt box and from nt box we want to manage the printing.

Hi
Through HP Jetadmin tool you can configure the Printer in the WinNT Machine and make it as a Print Server.
Configure Remote Printer in the HP-UX so, that you can respool your print job through NT Print server and you can Manage the Print spool through NT itself.

There is an LPD/LPR server on the NT resource kit if my memory serves me correct. Once you have set this up you can simply point your HP-UX box to the remote server via SAM/printing and it should work.

Yes, you need the LPR service on the NT box. Set up the printer as a remote printer on a remote print server (via SAM is pretty easy). However, to my knowledge, you can not add any lp options to your print commands. So, no print formatting from the command line.

Using SAM I have configured the remote printer(rpc2).But it says connection to hpprint(NT box)is down.

You can install JetAdmin software for Unix (Rev. D.06.21) on the HPUX box and use the ip address to install the printer.

I'm not familiar with Jet Admin, so I can't help you there, but here's a little bit more information about LPR/LPD. The NT LPD is fairly basic (at least for NT workstation - I haven't played with what comes with NT server much, but I imagine it's pretty similar). Some third party products (such as Netmanage's Chameleon) are more robust. This works well, but I'm not sure it's what you're looking for. The print jobs don't usually show up in the print queue on the NT machine. If the print queue is down then the jobs won't print, but that's about the limit of the administration you can do from the NT side - the print jobs still reside in the queue on the UNIX server. I don't know if this will help with the JetAdmin side, but when using LPR/LPD the "Remote Printer Name" must be the same as the printer name in NT.

hi,

if encountered the problem with message 'connection to is down', please try to check the 'TCP/IP print server' service on your nt machine. by default it should be started manually, so please start it up and change the start up mode to 'automatic'. then you can retry your remote printing from hp-ux.

As your problem is solved it might be uninteresting ...

You could also use the smbclient from the SAMBA package on your UNIX box. With this client you can access any share (directory or printer) on your Windows NT/95/98 Workstations/Server. So you don't have to install additional produkts on your NT Box.

And as the LPR/LPD implementation on NT is pretty basic, the smbclient could serve your needs better.

Hi,

the simplest way is to set up you NT-Server
as a lpr/lpd print server. From HP-UX you
configure a remote printer to
NT-Server and then either printername
or sharename on NT. Don't have blanks in both names !! If you only print TEXT to can configure your NT-Printserver to TEXT modus
instead of RAW modus. Then you have no problems with CR/LF. Maybe you will setup
two queues.
