NTP question

Hi,

I need to install NTP on one of my HP-UX server.

The thing is it is not clear for me, if I need to install a client, broadcast or server.

This server will get the time from one of the public NTP server, and then other machines on the network will get the time from it (HP-UX machine, Windows NT servers).

Can someone help me to understand what is the better choice for me?

Many thanks,

Chris.

Re: NTP question

NTP is both client and server

configure using SAM is the easiest

point it to the other NTP server and then point the other machines to it

broadcast is not needed

Re: NTP question

Hi Chris:

For the server that receives its time from an external source (e.g. the US Naval Observatory), declare the external source as a 'server'.

For the server(s) that synchronize their time to your local, master (above), declare their source as a 'server' which is defined to be your master clock.

For a good list of time sources, see:

Chapter-7 of "Installing and Administering Internet Services" is a complete guide to setting up NTP.

Re: NTP question

Hi
The answere is this host is both a client and a server. It is a client to the public server (stratum 1) and a server for your other hosts (stratum 2).
You only need broadcast if you have a great number of clients (will reduce network traffic). Use SAM/Time sources/Actions/Add Server or peer, this is very simple.
