Re: On iCOD

hi zap .
we use iCOD. we run several boxes with more CPU's installed than activated....
you will start paying for the cpu if and when you use icod_notify command which will send an e-mail to HP who will in return give a key to activate (icod_modify command)....

Reading the documents that Mic refers to will provide most answers to you questions.

Is there anything particular you need to know?

regards.

Re: On iCOD

Why does Hp install more CPUs but not activate them?In my opinion iCOD means if my server needs more CPUs, those cpus will activate itself otomatically, and verse versa.

Re: On iCOD

the advantage of icod is that you do not need downtime to install/activate a CPU, and it can be done instantly.

but of course you have to pay for the iCOD software......even when additional CPU's are not activated.

Re: On iCOD

Zap, I believe there is still a functionality like you describe, but I do not remember the name (it's not ICOD). It's some kind of pay-per-use -- maybe limited to disk, but I thought there was CPU as well.

The reason not to activate CPUs automatically: generally speaking, once a CPU is on, you have to pay for it. They might be $25,000. Your company might not want to pay $25,000 without authorizing it in advance.

Hope this makes sense.

Re: On iCOD

iCAP - Instant Capacity ( formerly known as iCOD or Instant Capacity on Demand)
is a capability to provide instant capacity to a server whenever there is a demand. It can be used in an automated fashion using PRM & WLM or manually usinf icod commands.
Processing capacity consists of the system components
- Processors
- Memory
Prior to activation, an iCOD component must be purchased from HP and licensed through the application of a right-to-use (RTU) license codeword.
The iCOD software product is a part of the HP On Demand Solutions Program.
RTU codewords can be obtained from teh icod portal
http://www.hp.com/go/icod/portal

Commands that are extremely helpful are
icod_status
icod_modify

along with the parmodify and parmgr.
There are some TiCODs which are the Temporary iCODs used temporarily to kick in during peak load.

thanks
