We are planning to migrate a 10 terabyte oracle 9i database to 10g release 2. All systems are PA-RISC. The test pa-risc system is running hp-ux 11.23 the prod system is running 11.11i. Besides the four patches and the C++ complaining Oracle will do, are there any other known land mines I need to look out for? Would it be advisable to cold load the test server back to 11.11i and test the process first or am I safe running my tests on 11.23? I suspect the introduction of the patches in 11.11i makes back loading the test server advisable, but I just wanted to check with the experts

Solution
I would never regard a test of an Oracle 9 to 10 on 11.23 as a valid test for the same migration for an 11.11 box --- and especially on a 10TiB database. If this were me, I would put the test box back down to 11.11; copy your production database to it (ie Oracle 9) and then do the Oracle 9 to 10 upgrade/migration. This is the only safe way to test.
When this is done and production has been migrated would I then upgrade the test environment to 11.23 in preparation of production migration to 11.23.
I have actually done simultaneous upgrades of both Oracle and the OS but only in the case where I have throughly tested and documented the procedures.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Oracle 9i to 10g
Shalom,
Did you know Oracle provides different binaries for PA-RISC and IA64 even on the same operating system?
This tells me that your experience on 11.23 is not relavent to 11.11.
Based on the size of the database I doubt this involves a 32 bit to 64 bit word conversion, but there are important data conversion steps that must be performed exactly according to the Oracle manuals. Not doing so can lead to a failure.
In your shoes I would run all these tests on a test system that runs PA-RISC 64 bit OS and Oracle.
