output file /dev/rmt/3m is not a valid device file for backup
All device file in ioscan -fnC tape output backup and restore using tar command works fine. But using fbackup command, the above message appears.
Can some help me identify the problem?
Thanks.

Yes, there is. I've used that tape on my tar backup/restore.

Re: output file /dev/rmt/3m is not a valid device file for backup
I'm using a DLT tape.
It was strange because it works on tar command but not on fbackup.

Re: output file /dev/rmt/3m is not a valid device file for backup
I did use a cleaning tape.
mt rewind command is successful.
still fbackup won't work.
FYI. I'm using a Digital DLT7000 tape drive (taken from our other server- Tru64 machine)
Thanks, jhay

Re: output file /dev/rmt/3m is not a valid device file for backup
Have a look at this previous thread...
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=629179
One question though... Is this a genuine DEC TZ87 drive or a DLT4000 set to emulate one. If it's a DLT4000, you can change the config switches so that it appears as a DLT4000 and will work with fbackup.

John

Re: output file /dev/rmt/3m is not a valid device file for backup
It is a genuine DEC TZ89 tape drive.
I did try to use the recommendation on the other thread to use hostname in fbackup command, but still, it doesn't work.
Is there any patches available so that i could use non-HP tape drive?
Thanks, jhay

Re: output file /dev/rmt/3m is not a valid device file for backup
The tape drive is not supported by the current HPUX box i'm using as per HP support. We manage to replace the tape drive with supported one and my backup works as expected.
Thank you for all your support!
Cheers, jhay
