password file got corrupted

My password file got corrupted and i couldn't able to login to my system with any user. some i recovered to get for root user connected. i started adding existed users with same group and userids. but i couldn't able to connect with those users.. do u have any guess what could have been wrong with that

Are you using trusted system ?

Do you have a shadow file ?

Connect how, logon? Are the home directories there?

Hi,

Restart you server into single user and check if you have any backup copy of passwd file .
if you have then replace with passwd and reset root passwd again.
then do init 3

Shalom,

console login as root should work.

From there, you can rebuild /etc/passwd or the trusted system files enough to bring the system up to restore the reset.

Assuming you have them backed up.
