PHNE_29887 is related cumulative ARPA Transport patch. I dont think it will affect java any how.

Re: PHNE_29887 patch effect on java 1.4
can't see why it should.
The readme files at:
http://www5.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/patchDetail.do?BC=patch.breadcrumb.main|patch.breadcrumb.pdb|patch.breadcrumb.search|&patchid=PHNE_29887&context=hpux:800:11:11
don't mention anything.
What makes you suspect there may be an impact?
Also, later patch: PHNE_33159

Re: PHNE_29887 patch effect on java 1.4
I have PHNE_29887 installed since a long time on servers running intensive java servers. No side effect seen.
I recently (about 2 weeks) installed the superseding patch PHNE_33159 on another server running the same java applications, and also had no issue with that.

Re: PHNE_29887 patch effect on java 1.4
I think it helps not hurts.
If java is critical, install the patch alone or with its minimal dependencies and immediately after, run a series of tests. If there is ill effect, back out the patch with swremove.
