What does it mean when you ping a box and you get
the ip address of that box but at the end of the line
has ret=-1 ?

Hi,
it means your system cannot reach the given address because
- that system is down
- there's no network route to that address
- ...

All unix flavours are exactly the same . . . . . . . . . . for end users anyway.
