Hi Dan,

Any chance you could tell us why the forums suffered a cataclysmic non-working event today?

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

I'll be the first to reply, unless someone beats me to it. The forums experienced unplanned downtime over the past 24+ hours. This was found to be due to, how shall I say, human error in the area of data storage -- this has subsequently been corrected. I really apologize for this...we are convening to make sure it never happens again.

Regards,
Dan

Edit: Looks like I was second!

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

Bad luck on not making first reply :)

Good to know what happened and I'm sure you have it all covered. I personally bought down a multination company's storage system with my knee and a swivel chair once so I sympathise :)

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

Dan,
Found a strange one:
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=428427

It does not show a bunny in the list but Bill got the 10 points. (even after refreshing a couple of times)

I know this is a small problem in compare with the meltdown last week, so no high prio on this one I think.

Hi,

I posted two times here:

Post counter is three, however you can see only my first post.

and while trying to post this I got:

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

Hi Dan,

things are strange at the moment.

According to the post, I am logged in but yet it suggests, if I am the owner of this thread, I should login!?!?

The first time I hit reply, I got:
Could Not Open URL
The URL you requested does not exist or is not retrievable at this site. You can return to the HP IT Resource Center home page (itrc.hp.com).

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

Dan,

Glad to see both you and the Forums are alive and well again! It's tough when you're so dependent on technology and that technology decides to take a break.

Anyway, on to the new and revised monthly issues list:

1) Recover the content lost during the 9/20/03 conversion/update - there are
numerous threads which suffered partial content loss, Merijn's statistics
postings being a prime example. Other examples point out that the benefit of the ITRC database as a resource has
been severely compromised. An excellent dialog on wiping disks via various commands has now been rendered non-s
ensical because much of it has been lost.

2) Remove the new message button from within a thread so it will no longer be confused with the reply button.

3) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other
miscellaneous off-topic threads so that those who don't wish to view these
items can bypass them.

4) Show the poster's name in the reply window.

5) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we
don't have to page all the way up to the top of long threads. Also, add the
same links to the notification pages.

6) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

7) Other forms of URLs need to be recognized (https, ftp) as the http ones
are.

8) Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can
be understood.

9) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by
setting up their own groupings (like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus
Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well, you get the idea).

10) From Merijn: The ability to have a fixed signature in one's profile.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

Hi,

concerning Pete's list:

2-4) agree
5) what about using the home key? :^)
6) agree wholeheartedly
8) agree

addition:
add value of email notification flag and date of last visit of author.
the chance to up or down the awarded points after initial awarding.

does someone else have the problem, that sometimes a link doesn't create a new windows?

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

Fully agree with 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, and 10

. I still want 100% (relative width) tables, so I don't have that much wasted space. Currently I've widowized the Forum screen and shifted it out of the visible area, so that only the thread is visible. White on the right is clipped by the window size, the stuff on le left is shifted out of the window. Screen shots available on request.
. I still want sane (DD-MM-YYYY or YYYYMMDD) date formats
. And Dan still has some personal wishes, that Pete knows about, but are not ready to post here yet.

I realy don't care about 2, and 5

I want 3, but with a lot of added functionality. Still to be discussed with Pete and Dan.

For 6, the search engine could be improved, but remember that it will *never* be perfect. Give us an inch, and we take you a mile (Hazel O'Connor). Target should be to be at least be better and more usable than Google.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

Oh, and Pete, these can be placed in your standard list, becaused I've heard them often:

· Put the most recent 10 entries ordered by descending date in "my solution(s)", "my response(s)", and "my question(s)" in the user profile, instead of the oldest 10 (unusable) links.

The following thread is not right:

It shows that it should have 2 responses, but when I click on it I don't see any.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

impossible to reply to questions today, same as yesterday. Just keep getting page cant be displayed. Performance is also very slow, just trying to refresh a page often gets page cant be displayed. Going back to the itrc page, then to forums, then to hp-ux seems to work better for some strange reason.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

Add the following to Pete's list,

11. Option should be given for a thread to be visible under multiple forums (related).

For instance I posted something on Securepath under storage section and found no replies. But after posting it under serviceguard section I got many useful replies.

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=424908

By giving a link for the same thread to be visible under multiple forums (if selected by the owner upon creation) we can avoid duplicate postings.

Thanks,

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

Hi Dan,

another wish:

date of posting and points assigned in the solutions lists.
filter for family/category in the solutions lists.
search in solutions list.

question:
Is the search engine case sensitive?

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

It is still impossible to use OPERA 7.xx with this forum:
-no way to reply or assign points to a replyer.

-for a european user, the search is not always working: I mean it works better than in 2003 (when it was impossible to use it-> replying that we are not connected) but sometimes it comes back to the old error...

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

I just tried Opera 7.23 and it failed just like in the past.

I just tried again and I am typing this reply with Opera. I still can't submit it because I get:

By the way I tried to make a search and it came back with:

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - February 2004

I am using Opera 7.50 Preview 1 and it works fine.

Do a search on google for "Opera 7.50p1" and you will get results. Note that this is a PREVIEW (ie Alpha or Beta) release and it does have a few bugs but it still works rather well.
