Re: Please Post Forums Issues - October 2005
With the rather uninformative subjects on some threads, I feel that a good search engine is even more important. I either get nothing or a big list of items that don't seem to apply. Sometimes only Google works.
This is a great source of information, but not always that easy to search through.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - October 2005
A little late to the party perhaps, but I have a problem with Michael's reply, and the echos thereof in this topic 'attacking' Arun.
I looked at a few more of Arun's replies and I do not see a problem, just a friend, trying to help like the rest of us.
Then I looked further at the reply, and found that it is in fact verbatim the two relevant lines from the MAN PAGES TEXT for top.
So obviously the text is the same, as it appears to have came from the same source, BUT IT PROBABLY WAS NOT A COPY OF A PRIOR REPLY.
I would have liked to see both Muthukumar, and Arun point out that the solution came form the man pages, but that is a very minor complaint. Both were trying to help. Both deserve the same points.
It is just too much trouble to go back and see if an answer was provided between you seeing the question and being ready for submit. That said, I am crazy enough to do it if I get distracted for a significant time before finalizing an answer.
Lesson here?
Never assume malice when it could be explained by bad timing!
fwiw,
Hein.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - October 2005
Although not a perfect solution all it really takes is the owner of the thread to write back and say, "Thanks, that link (those links) didn't solve my problem".
I find that these forums have less unresolved threads than say google groups, in my opinion.
I started to look seriously at the forums when google pointed me back to answers on the itrc forums time and time again.
We should embrace the diversity of the forum community, people use it for different reasons and have a different understanding of what the forums are here for.
Within certain parameters (which the moderators maintain) this will almost always be the case, it's human nature and part of the learning process.
I sometimes post links when I think the thread might solve the asker's question or it is the best information I can find.
There are lots of answers in itrc threads which the search engine doesn't always turn up or highlight.
I guess this is a bit of a rant. I hope you realise that it is well intentioned.

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - October 2005
Go to google and get plenty of threads from the Forums with reference to the bdfmegs script.
The search engine is definitely the weakest link in the forums and we've been complaining about it for a LONG TIME. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE figure something out to fix it.

Since this morning, when trying to reply to a post, I get "The system is currently unavailable. Please try again later.

Now it is working...

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - October 2005
I have been using Netscape 7.1 for some years when accessing the ITRC. I had switched from Explorer due to issues with that tool and ITRC.
Recently, I can no longer open attachments on posts.
1. They do open with Explorer.
2. They download with Netscape 8.0.4
Something change?

My reply shows up if I go back and look at the thread. However, the reply count is still showing zero.
Am I no longer worthy of having my replies counted? ;)

After I submitted my previous reply here, I went back to the HP-UX family home and the thread I referenced above is now showing a reply count of 1.
There was about a 2 minute time lag there though. Something seems a bit fishy......

Re: Please Post Forums Issues - October 2005
The resolution to the problem I noted three posts back appears to have been a known problem.
For other users that may encounter this the solution is:
DELETE the compreg.dat file, located in the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\components folder.
Make sure you exit Netscape completely, including QuickLaunch, before deleting the compreg.dat file. It will be recreated when you next start Netscape.
Netscape 7.1 is outdated and buggy, and deleting the compreg.dat file is only a temporary solution since the problem tends to return. If you want to know more about this bug, see http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=203689
====================================================
I was just not comfortable with the latest 8.0.4 version of Netscape.
My apologies for spamming the board.

dl
