Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Enhancement request idea - don't know if it's been suggested before.

I'd like it if the threads themselves had the "magic rabbit" icon in them wherever the author has assigned the appropriate points, which I guess is the 8-10 range. In looking through many long threads, it is difficult to find the responses with the high point counts and would be much easier to find them if the reply had the rabbit icon at the top or in the header of the reply next to the points.

I realize that point assignments are not always the best indication of the correct answer. Some people don't give out points while others give 10 points for a "me too" reply. However, it would still make it easier to find the "magic" answer in a long thread if you could look for the rabbit icon.

Also, if the threads were modified so that the rabbits were visible in the threads, it would help to have a button that takes you directly to the "rabbit" response in the thread. That way someone could read the question and then go directly to the "correct" answer.

Just a thought...

Dave

Sort Answers By: Date or Points

From a Linux Thread

For the last couple of months the ITRC will randomly decide to not load most of the images.

In addition the fonts are off so that the whole site looks like crap.

Attached is a screen shot.

Sean, welcome to the world of no style-sheet.

All that's happened is the session has failed to load the stylesheet, and cached the failed download.

When I get that, just closing the browser, and trying again fixes it.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Ganesh/Melvyn/Cheryl/SEP/Michael/Mei/Pete, thanks for collaborating on cleaning up threads (moving them).

Dave, as SEP 'points' out, you can sort thread replies based on point or date posted. Will consider the icon idea.

Sean, Stuart states it ... the stylesheets are not getting loaded for some reason. It may be our end, networking, browser. Opening a new browser or ctrl-F5 usually works for me.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan,

We have another instance of a two year old thread being re-activated: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/services/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=37594

Could a moderator please change the heading so people know not to post to it?

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

When I get the wrong font, it is not just the stylesheet that fails to load. It is due to corruption of the main html file, where the start and end of the dependant URLS get converted to '???'s like this example I cut out:

<script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript" src="???en.wpa.link.hpweb.javascript_dir???hpweb_utilities.js"></script>

Here's another example:

When the pages load fine, these ???s are replaced with the full URL ie "http://..."

It appears to be just the urls that contain the wpa.link part.

Something is corrupting the code. I suggest you packet sniff what comes out of your webserver to evaluate whether it is the webserver itself, the page generation software, or run browsers at whatever segments may lie between your webserver and the intern...

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Hi Dan,

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=670037
I opened this thread, answered it and I got the error "Error while posting the reply"
After I returned to thread list, I saw, it disappeared into thin air.

some micro worm hole here or bermuda triangle?

Hi,
I am new in Unix and after resign of our sysadmins I am in trouble with Alpha 4100.

I have backed up some files using

tar cvf /dev/ntape/tape0 file1
tar cvf /dev/ntape/tape0 file2
...
tar cvf /dev/ntape/tape0 filen

now
1. is the filen ereased the previouses?
2. If not, I want to see the files on the tape. (I dont remember the filenames)
3. (if not again) I want to untar file2 what shall I do?

These all questions might be summarized as; how can I position the tape so that no ereasing occurs and I get the file and filename in the tape?

Thanks in advance

Michael,
Do you recall what Forum section the question was posted in? I think that was a duplicate post. (Not 100% positive.)

Cheryl,

sure, it was Tru64 and it was not a duplicate. If it were, there should be still the original, right? ;-)

still wondering

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Dan:

Is there any discussion on adding a sticky flag for the forums. Something for keeping a particular thread at the top. I could see this being usefull for the TOP requested questions.
Sort-of for the most asked question(s) (same question / different person) would have the answers posted there and the thread would always be the fist thread "always at the top".

... thoughts?
Enjoy!
