Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Keep getting these SSI errors while navigating around;

Error processing SSI file
'/cm/FamilyHomeContent/1,1152,LoggedIn!117,00.html'

Happened a few times this week, only seems to happen early AM UK Time.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Hi Dan,

In my user profile the following appears:
===
replies the member posted that were rated between 8-10

AutoRAID Performance
Executing windows NT based programs from HP-UX server
/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,1150,0x31915220af9bd5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html
Number of CPUs and free slots
Failing to mirror LV despite sufficient PEs
more...

==

ie the url addition rather than the subject. I noticed it first yesterday.

Back on the points subject, clicking on the user name does show you how many points a user has assigned to his/her questions.. perhaps reminding the user of questions they have left to award when posting new posts may be a solution.
If you really want to reply to those only assigning points then get their profile first.. in either case, I'm sure most people would reply in anycase, I think this is better for the good of the itrc search that questions are always replied and discussed rather than ignored.. I think all users would agree on this.

Bill

The forums are pitifully slow today.

In opening this message it took almost 2 minutes.

Screen shot attached.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Hi again,

I think I also just figured out where the duplicate posts are coming from. When I submitted my reply just before now, I ended up with a 404 error instead of a confirmation screen. I went back to the post and verified that my reply was indeed included. However, if I had chosen to resubmit the data on a refresh from the 404 or gone back and typed it in and submitted again, there would have been a duplicate reply.

I suspect that when someone has composed a new question and received a "404 not found" instead of the confirmation screen, they have gone back and re-entered the question not realizing that it actually worked except for the confirmation screen crapping out.

Thanks,
Jim

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

It took me about 16 minutes to assign points to two replies to a message on 09/07/01 11:50 EDT.

Perhaps a 16 way V class on a gigabit LAN dedicated for use by the forums would help ;^)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Dan,

I'm still seeing performance problems. It takes several minutes to get an updated page and sometimes I get HTTP errors.

Also, I may be missing something but is there an easy way to find out how many points I have?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, the forums appear to be very slow this morning for some reason. I have logged two cases with our support team who is looking into the issue. Hopefully, the performance will be improved shortly. Thanks for your patience.

Santosh, regarding points, if you simply click on your name (see it above in your reply) you will be taken to your public profile. Currently, you are at 37 -- just need about 21 10-points answers and you'll be wearing your first hat!!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Just today, when I tried to login, I got 'Object 404 not found'. That happens every now and again, but not too often. I usually see it when the forums are running extra slow.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Hello Dan,

today I could not reply for about 20minutes - timeouts!

Later I noticed on the "search" page that even if I
select the "100 answers/page" I do only get up to 50.
Why is there the selection "100" available, then?

TIA,
Wodisch

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Dan,

I'm still seeing intermittant problems. In fact, when I just tried to post this, I got a 404 error message. Had to retry a couple of times to get the reply to message screen.

Also, apparently the forum server was down since Sunday 4:00 AM EDT (yeah, I've been trying since then).

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Hello Dan,

today was rather bad: I could not log in during working
hours (germany) and even now (19:40 GMT-1) response
time is pretty slow, often "SSI" or "404" :-(

Is there something we can do in terms of "usage" - like
login with the cookies set to auto-reply, safe them or
such?
I am used to have multiple browser windows open
concurrently, is there any problem with that (though
I do hate to "back" to the overview pages all the time)?

And seeing only 4 postings on "management" seems
like everybody else had the same problems...

Wodisch

Hi Dan,
Was the forum dead today?
Im back after a few days break, and only just managed to join in after several attempts during all this day...
I got timed out errors, deny errors, blank pages etc...

All the best

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Hello again,

answering is possible, now, at least ;-)

I do have an "enhancement request" (or whatever it
is called here):

Could there be a "button" (or such) to correct my own
replies and/or questions, please?
I have just noticed a lot of rather embarrasing typos
and would like to correct them...

TIA,

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Dan, one little change I'd like to see.
I usually read at the top category level, like HP-UX, not HP-UX/networking or whatever.
If I reply to a posting, after the reply acknowledgement I can not go back to the main category, only to the sub-category.

And I'll add my voice to the chorus of complaints about slow server response. In general, the rest of the *.hp.com websites are almost always faster than the forums.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Yeah, to say that the servers "were having issues" is a bit of an understatement.

Since the problems started over the weekend (sometime Saturday) why did it take until this morning (Monday) for the issues to be resolved? Is there nobody on call over the weekend for these servers? If the machines were any of my production servers my pager would have been going crazy and I would have been in getting the things fixed.

It seems to me that there desperately needs to be some kind of weekend / holiday support and monitoring set up for these servers so that problems don't persist for 2 days until someone gets back to work.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Hello Dan (all "Dan"s ;-),

regarding the previous "king's" reply:
what kind of "SLA" (to use current buzz-words) do
*we* actually have on the forums?

If the forums are actually run as a "nice-to-have" or
"have-fun-but-dont-complain" feature of the department
running them, well, then we cannot complain!

I would *NOT* like the forums to be run at a priority
that low, but anyway: Thanks a lot for having them!

Perhaps if one of the "Dan"s could tell us, then we might
be a little bit more patient, would we not?

AND if there would be something like a "netiquette"
page or a "how-to-behave-right" page (or even a
FAQ page) then perpahs we could use the forums in
a less demanding way (for the servers, of course ;-)

As the "older" reader might see: this is another attempt
to get a FAQ page setup and running... Have you ever
considered using a "Wiki" approach for such pages?
Perhaps limited to users logged in and owning a "hat"
to not let somebody destroy those pages? (Any "hat"
other than a "crown" would be sufficient for me, as you
can see ;-)

But even if only the "royals" would be able to modify
those pages, it would be a very nice feature.

Dear Queens and Kings, may I humbly ask:
would you accept to serve your loyal subjects in
such a way?

Loyally,
Wodisch

Re: Please Report Forums Issues (9/4/2001)

Hi Everyone,

The servers that the forums sit on were having issues this morning (and over the weekend). Our support team has put things back in order, however will continue to monitor the situation. Terribly sorry for the inconvenience.

Wodisch, the enhancement you requested is already on the list of things to get done!! So, you are not the only one with the desire to edit your postings! :)

Best Regards,
Dan
