Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Dan,

The past couple of days I have had to hit the submit button twice to get any posts to submit. This may not be your problem, it may be my stupid browser gone loco. (I am using IE 6.0) The posts do not seem to be posting twice or anything, just the first click doesn't do anything.

On another note, I use the ddmmyyy format, being in the Western US, I mostly only do it to confuse most of the people around here... ;)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hi All,

Thanks, as usual, for the feedback. As most of you are aware (Donny included), we are still experiencing slowdowns for about two hours around 9-11am EST. Our support and lab teams are working to uncover the culprit, so please standby.

John, I think this may be contributing to the delay in the first submit click you report. Not sure...I'll report to the teams.

Procura, I'll check on the png file format and get back to everyone.

I was informed yesterday that the ITRC search engine which the forums leverages was having problems over the past couple of days. Hence, it was unavailable at times. Looks like it is back on track.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hi Procura,

For some reason the forums doesn't like the .png file format. However, if you click on the attachment to open the .png file (and receive the error page), change the file extension in the URL from .png to .txt. The graph will then open. I tried it and it works! In future, you may want to upload as a .txt file.

By the way, cool graph! Really is neat to see how members progress through the months and years. The one user CA868649 appears to be bogus, so I'll delete the account.

Thanks,
Dan

Yeahh, sure :-PPP

Not in Opera, it *does* open the file, but displays something like

Hmm, I cut much more, but the paste only pastes these few bytes. Well, it's junk too. Try it yourself :)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Procura, sounds like you need to make the move "down" to IE....as 75% of the ITRC users have done. :P The .txt extension does work with IE. You could also upload as a zip file, but the jpg format look ok from here.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

About the 'have to hit the submit button twice to get any posts to submit' problem mentioned by John (Payne) and others:

As far as I know, this is a change in behaviour, probably since the last update of the Forums software.

In the old days, when you clicked on the "SUBMIT" button, your browser gave a 'busy' indication (lower bar of IE) so that you knew that it was working and you just had to wait.

These days, when you click on the "SUBMIT" button, the status bar just says "javascript:answerForumSubmit", but it also says that *before* you click it (when your cursor is over the button). As far as I know, you get *no* other 'busy' indication and you just have to wait and hope for the best. In my experience, *if* you have clicked correctly and wait sufficiently long, the post is always successful the first time.

So let me try that now ...

Hi Dan:

It seems the Forum has an acute (turning chronic, lately) stuttering problem:

Perhaps you can clean up the echoes as well as the root problem :-))

James, see my earlier response. As far as I know, it is 'operator error', caused by a non-intuitive interface, i.e. no (real) feedback on the currently executing action.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Radhakrishnan, If you switch to Opera 7, you can do it with right click in the page, and then choose "Reload every ..." to select the frequency of reload.

The (very) negative side of using Opera is that you will not be able to asign points.

The (very) positive side is that HP is maybe more motivated to make the forum Opera compliant, and that your pages show quicker.

Come on Dan, kick the programmers to stick to the standards, HP *IS* a w3c member, so their pages should be w3c too IMHO. Stick to the standards you create yourself.

Wonder if this has already been stated - if so, let me add to the headcount -

It'd be good to have separate query boards for OVO Windows and OVO Unix.

Helps the responders too!!! From the stats point of view to know how much they know either of the 2.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

You know, I???m not much of a stickler for all the pretties that you see on all of the web sites these days, but what I am seeing on the forum pages right now is pretty ugly even to me (see attached pic for demonstration).

Any clues into what would be causing this on my end? Am I the only one that has this view when they view a thread on the forums? If so, then WHY ME???

If I said something to make you mad, Dan, I apologize ;-( I???ll take it all back if you will just fix my pages!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

John that's something that happens when itrc, your isp or both are having trouble. I get it quite regularly, during the above circumstances.

Off Topic. That background picture on your screen shot looks interesting. Where is it?

Can I see the whole thing?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hi Dan,

I find that I get errors when posting replies to questions...

along the lines of page not found, the only remedy I've found to this is deleting an ITRC cookie called "cm", any ideas what this is,

Thanks,

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hi All....hopefully I get all of your questions answered below:

1. Kurt: for some reason, pressing submit does initiate the message submittal. The delay is in seeing this has occurred. Wait at least 6 seconds before clicking again. We are working on getting this fixed. It has to do with the performance issue we are seeing. Sorry about that.

2. V.Nyga: the filters on the search UI are not valid for forums. Obviously, this is not entirely intuitive.

3. Albert: thanks for the ideas.

4. procura: will consider the date format an option, thanks.

5. James: yes, multiple servers are in use and that is a backend function that is performed. It is being looked into.

6. Steven: thanks, the 404s may be part of the perf. issue we are trying to resolve.

7. Frank/James: yes, the response to submittal is not appearing for some reason. This is causing users to submit multiple times. I've got that reported.

8. John C: I have no idea why the screenshot you attached appears as it does. May be browser related....I'll ask some folks here and see what they have to say.

9. Gary: the "cm" file is a cookie that is generated by the ITRC. Clearing it and logging in again has shown to clear things up, such as page not found and login errors. Try f5 as well.

Regards,
Dan
