Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

I've been locked out since about noon yesterday. I could read the posts but could not reply. Could not even use search or contact hp.
Got the server or DNS error message.

I tried clearing the IE6 history but that did not help.

Also tried logging on to my home isp to eliminate the possibility of the corporate firewall playing tricks with me. Still broken.

Finally went to the www.hp.com site this morning about 10 and sent a message and it's working again.

About the same time this started I got a message which was similar to the one Pat Walleck reported: Error processing SSI file '/cm/FamilyHomeContent/1,11868,LoggedIn!117,00.html'

This is his message. I didn't right mine down.but it looked about the same.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

i noticed that i'm not the only one with the reply problem. basically any page that would have me enter something in ALL of hp, not just the forums, was causing an error. i cleared the cache, history, set the browser to check against the server every time, and ie still did that.

i hope that helps in finding the problem so that it doesn't occur again.

btw: i'm using 5.5

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Hi Dan,

Approx 12 hours ago I wasn't able to login for over an hour, so I gave up much to my wife's delight!

The site has improved a great deal since I started actively using the forums last June.

Keep up the good work!

Dan

When I follow some of the links on the ITRC if it is a us-suppport type URL it askes me to authenticate. This fails (as I'm europe). I've also tried to switch to the europe site on the authentication screen, but after authentiocation it just takes me back to the page I was browsing.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Dan,

I tried to post a reply to this thread and another one, on Friday. It gave me an acknowledgement, and thanked me for my first forum participation (which it wasn't), but when I checked the thread, no reply had actually been posted.
I cleared the browser history, and could post a reply. I was a bit thrown off by the acknowledgement.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Hi All,

Thanks for your feedback. Performance seems to be very good in recent weeks (and past month!).

Harry d Brown Jr: no eta has been provided. If I hear anything, will let you know.

Tim: If I am interpreting your post correctly, I think this is an issue that is known and documented, however, no eta for a fix in next release. I'll double check the case id.

Hillary: not sure what is happening at your end -- perhaps it is related to your history files being used (hence clearing cache helped). I'll have to dig a little deeper on this one.

Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Good day Dan,

A couple of things:

1) I recall seeing something recently when I responded to a post at home that thanked me for my first post. I think we all know my first post has been a while back. The repsonse got posted, so I blew it off and didn't think anything else about it. I don't recall exactly when that was, sometime last week, I think. Sounds like a DB glitch somewhere.

2) I'm going to complain about something that's been a pet peeve of mine for a while. I think I may have actually skipped posting it in Dec. and Jan., so I'll post it again now. Please, please, please, please do something about the points assignment process!!!!!! It is such a pain having to click on assign points, actually assign the points, click submit, click on the link on the thank you page to go back to the post, and start the process again. I really wish we could assign points all responses in a thread that haven't gotten points yet at once.

I still think that refining that points process may help with more people assigning points to all responses in their threads as well.

Food for thought for ya.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the reply....I'll pass along the point about getting the "new reply" page.

Regarding the points assignment process, a gui has been reworked and it is a matter of getting it into the development schedule. Although the current method is somewhat tedious, it works (read: priority is moderate). However, I'll take your feedback and work it into the enhancements list.

Thanks for your note!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Dan,

I don't know if this is in your area or not, but I decided to go poking around a bit in the 'business customer discussion groups'. I got there by clicking the link at the bottom of the main ITRC Forums page.

When I got done, I discovered that there is not an easy way to get back to the ITRC Forums.

Any particular reason they don't have a link back to the Forums?
Seems to me that there should be a reciprocal link on their site.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Hi Patrick,

Good question. The forums you refer to are "owned and operated" by another group within HP. They'll consult with me on certain things, but for the most part I'm only involved with the ITRC Forums.

As you know, the ITRC Forums attracts users who are not involved with IT issues (or are not IT pros), but need solutions nonetheless. The link to the other site was provided to help point these customers to a more suitable venue. Having a link to the ITRC Forums from the business customer discussion forums wasn't seen as being necessary.

Perhaps the link should open a new browser session....hmmmm. Thoughts?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

A new browser window might be a good idea. I would also consider putting a warning to that effect with the link though. I get annoyed when I'm not aware that a new window has been opened.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

The last couple of days I've been intermittently seeing a REALLY weird problem. If I am replying to a question, and I click the 'back' button I will occasionally see the RAW HTML code displayed for the page. ALL of it. If I then click refresh, it usually just leaves the doce displayed. For some reason it doesn't interpret the code. VERY VERY Weird.

I am currently viewing the Forums on an HP9000/C200 running HP-UX 11i with Internet Explorer 5.0

Hi Dan,

The new hats are very good ! But, one thing noticed is the forum's description is not yet updated with the new 7500 points and 20000 points hats ! Take a look at here:

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Dan: not so much an issue as a suggestion; would it be possible to make the default to having notification sent when one creates a new thread?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Hi Dan,

The response time on the site has been pretty good lately, congrats. The main bugbear now is the time taken to login when youre trying to reply to the first question of the day - of if youve been off for a while. I presume this is on another server or requires some intensive work to process the login - if this could be sped up it would be another vast improvement.

Cheers,

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Thanks for all for your feedback. I appreciate both the issues reported and the positive comments regarding the improved performance.

Deepak, that is a strange one regarding your profile! I'll have to pass that one along to the developers.

Take care,

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

I had problems about 4 hours ago trying to reply to messages, I would only get 404's.

The problem seems to have gone away now.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Hi John,

I had just a few folks mention they experienced the same thing, even though others were having no problem. My guess is that it may have had to do with a network issue or something related. Please let me know if you encounter it again.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

Dan-

I had a number of "server not found" errors showing up today, and they go away if I refresh enough. To be fair, though, this has been happening for me today on other areas of the hp site (documentation, software depot) as well, but I noticed it here first, so I'll throw it out here.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - February 2002!

I wish you had an option to look at all posts on all forums at one time or at least those from the last hour or day. As a networking guy I can contribute to many of the forums but I'm getting carpal tunnel syndrome from clicking on the different forums to see if something new has shown up.
