Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Everyone,

Sorry about this late posting -- I was out of the office for two weeks.

The forums performance continues to be outstanding. Page delivery times and availability of the service are inside of our overall goals!

Nonetheless, please report any issues you encounter while using the forums during the month of July. As usual, this thread is ongoing and designed to capture your helpful feedback!

If reporting errors, please include URLs from your browser associated with error messages, and please include the date and time the errors occur.

You can also post your forums **successes** for July at:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xae47c4c76f92d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html

Thanks go to all of you who have submitted your past feedback!

Best regards,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan

I have noticed an intermitant problem when assigning points - Once points were allocated, if I selected to go back to the message AFTER the submit button was hit, the points don't seem to get allocated even if I then refresh.

It has'nt happened everytime.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

And the new way of point asignment inhibits me to asign multiple points to the same user (or should I consider this a bug fix :)

Good work, team!

In addition, for the points assignment, I don't really like that N/A was taken off the list when assigning points. I guess 0 can be used but that seems like the info was completely useless and it could be that the author did not want points assigned or just wanted a N/A but now there is not N/A (unless it has been added since my last post).

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Occasionally when responding to posts, I get a message thanking me for my first participation in the forums.

Normally doing a back/refresh/copy+paste/submit solves this.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan,

I can understand the need to move some questions to a more appropriate category (though it can by somewhat annoying at times), but I thinks this one was a bit much:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x980c36e69499d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html

It was a question about Glance, which is about as intrinsic to system administration as it gets.

I suppose you've got to have divisions and it's impossible to draw lines that will please everyone and I do understand, but . . .

Pete

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

when I shift-click on an hyperlink to get it in another window, the link won't open. In the address-bar is e.g. javascript:openExternal('http://support1.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?docLocale=en_US&docId=200000034057902').

When I remove javascript:openExternal(' and ') the link will open.

For the rest, the forum works perfectly. Performance is excellent these days. It is fun to work with.

Goodluck,
Donald

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

hi Dan,
in the date column we get always todays date, better if we have a provision for posted date, this will give an idea such that we have attempted it or it is a fresh one. many questions will have nearly same subject.

i think iam not wrong.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

I want to take the liberty to post a wish again after using the `new' forum for some time (with great pleasure BTW).

On reply I'd like to have the option to quote the last message instead of the initial message in the thread in the area above the reply.

Read http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xcb1036e69499d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html to understand what I mean

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Don...URLs pasted into forums messages, when clicked on, open a new browser window without requiring to 'shift-click'. Pressing shift will load the javascript line into the brower URLs.

Procura and V.V.Ravi, thanks for the suggestions. They are good ones and have been documented for review.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan,

to extend Merijn's wish:
can we have ALL the replies in a scrolled-textfield, please?
One third off the height of the browser window?
And the input field and that scrolled-textfield both about 90% of the browser window?
Right now (Netscape 4.79 on RedHat7.3) the input field is a meager quarter of the width of the browser window :-(

Thanks,

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan,

me again ;-)
Shahul started an interesting thread over there:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/PostAnswer/1,,0xd31b36e69499d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html

As I see it, we could improve the forums by better "partitioning" (or "categorization") a lot...

That would be a major impact to all users of coure, as the URLs would have to change (again), I guess (or just the titles/names?)

Wodisch

The ITRC Forums Manager who administers the forum has gained a hat - isnt this a conflict of interest ?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Wodisch -- your (and Shahul's) suggestion is worth looking into further, which I will do. I suppose redefining categories would have an impact on the URLs used if *new* areas were created. However, if existing areas were simply renamed, no change would be needed. Before anything is done, a hard look would be required at the impact and benefits.

Stefan -- no congratulations?? ;) If I can earn a hat, ANYONE can earn a hat, even if its over a period of 12 months! Those 2 point replies add up after awhile.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi, Dan!

You've been exceptionally responsive to suggestions in the past, and I've got only one addition at this time:

Add a 'you need to assign points' flag to the screen where I look at my messages. As I become more active on the forum, it has become more of an issue to find out *where* those last few responses are!

Keep up the good work.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan,

Still getting problems with the "Thank you for your first participation" message.
I can still get round it with the back-refresh-copy+paste-submit.

It seems that I can post the first reply of the day without a problem, but subsequent replies give me the problem.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

hi Dan,

in case of area of expertism, better u decide on it after a user achieve some points in that particular area, rather giving users a chance to declare themselves. because it is of no use even i declare that iam expert in this particuar area. nobody can directly contact me exept through forum.
what do u say? this is my opinion

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

hi Dan,
i forgot to add one more. better we have option to change points. for example by mistake if i assign less points for a great answer from a man like Clay, there is no option to revert it. it happened once or twice for me. pl look into it.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan,

Regarding Don's request, and your statement that all links open in a new window when you click on them, well, your statement is not entirely accurate.

I think it depends on what browser your are using. I use Netscape (currently 6.2.3) almost exclusively, and whenever I click on a link within a post, it opens in the same window. :(

I think if you use Internet Exploder, what you say may be true. I don't know about any other browsers like Opera or Mozilla.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan!

I have added more of my thoughts to Shaul's proposal for more categories. I thank Wodisch for bringing it to your attention here, but felt that the discussion will live and evolve firstly where it started:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xd31b36e69499d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html

BTW, your hat looks good on you, although you long ago distinguished yourself admirably!

...with warmest regards...

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi again Dan,

This is a follow up to my last response here.

I've done some experiments and have found the following:

1) MS-IE 6.0, Opera 6.02 and Netscape 4.78 all DO open new windows when you click on a link within a Forums response.

2) Netscape 6.2.3 and 7.0PR1 DO NOT open new windows.

Apparently Netscape changed something (OK, probably LOTS of somethings) between the 4.7X and 6.X versions that causes this behavior.

Something else for you to pass on to the developers. :)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan,

maybe something not-so-severe for your web-designers:
as you know, since I could not log-in on the european server earlier this month, I am using my american server id. And for the reason that I usually keep the cookies about my login, I normally don't have to login after starting my browser (Netscape 7.0PR1 for Stefan's statistic, no OpenExternal() in new window for me, neither). But to don my sand-towel for your and steven's congrats-threads (seemed appropriate to me ;-) I really had problems in LOGGIN OFF!
I had to go to the american server first, before it actually worked!?!
As I assume, really not the most common problem... and I can live with it. So, this is just for your collection of "user-problems" (but don't tell Claudia - she would laugh at one of *her* forumers not being able to log-off)

Regards,
Wodisch
