Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Patrick,

Hmmm, I'd do the Twilight Zone theme if I could figure out how to type it. ;)

Tried again today, still no results.

I'll keep checking.

Thanks,
Kel

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Searches were working for me yesterday as well. What probably explains this, is that there are several servers which were not updated all at once. It worked until the server which I was on, was updated.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan

I've got a problem with the forum search engine : can't find anything anymore ...

I don't remember having seen the forum choice a few days ago :
ITRC forum
Business forum

Anything changed lately ?

TIA

Fred

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

The search engine still quite often redirects me to US sites when I hit search being logged in from a europe link and my cookies were gone.

On US sites EU ID/passwd combo's are rejected

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

The forum search is definitely AWOL. Searching for anything returns no items. Searching for patches is also having problems. Searches I ran yesterday that returned pages of hits are now only returning 1.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi All,

Couple of things to report: the forums search function is now working properly (apologize for the downtime). Also, regarding being redirected to the wrong page after login, a fix was put in for this issue and now you will find that if you are at a forums page and go to login, you will be directed back to the page you were at. And lastly, (are you listening procura?), the members listing is now working for all users!

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hiya,

I can't seem to get into the search page. I keep getting a "could not login" page and associated messages. This is from the forums pages - I have not tried straight from itrc.hp.com.

Cheers!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Dan,

With the recent discussion regarding un-assigned points, I would like to make a recommendation.

If I submit a question, assign points and get the answer I was looking for, I would like the option to thank everyone and close the thread.

If people want to attach more comment to the subject, that is fine. But once I close it, any additional responses will get automatically set to a point value of zero.
This way I am not going to get slammed for not assigning points for a subject that people keeping adding more responses.

My 2 cents...

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Rodney,

I like your idea, and being able to "close" a thread has been suggested in the past. I'll get this higher on the priority list of things to add.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Rather than assign zero points after a thread has been closed, just don't increment the owner's reply count unless the owner goes back and assigns points. (or create a new category: replies after closed)

I'd hate to go back to a closed note and find someone had come up with a better solution and was assigned zero points.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

I think to "close" a question is a good idea, though I would distinguish those closed with a solution (? points > 7) to be "Resolved" from those not solved (? points < 7) to be just closed. The posting person could optionally make a comment - ie what they actually used to solve their problem. Closed threads could not be added to. Postings should also have some special icon with them when displayed that indicates the thread is open or closed. The Search engine should then be able to search just "Resolved" threads for answers - saving some time by not searching threads without points (solutions unknown). I think giving the posting person 1 point to close their thread would be a good thing. BTW - we really could use some kind of navigatable subject driven FAQ section to handle those recurring threads like the email attachment thing that seems to pop up every week.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan,

about the "closing of threads":
I would like to have several choices to close a thread, not only one (well, at least one I *do* want ;-)
- Closed, NO further replies possible
- Closed, further replies possible, but N/A
- Closed, further replies possible, NO points assigned, but the replies are NOT counted
Finally I would like to have the chance for the "owner" of a thread to still assign points to replies, even after "closing" it - in case a much better solutions comes up (but then, NO obligation for that)
Maybe that way we can get rid of some of the "points" trouble?

Wodisch

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

G'day Dan,

I, too, like the idea of being able to close a thread so further replies are NOT possible, or, as has been suggested, if replies are made they get an automatic N/A (or 0), or something to that effect.

The icon idea to indicate an open or close thread is a good idea as well.

Something else I would like to see, in addition to the date a thread had it's last response, is the date that the thread was originally created. That would let us know when someone has resurrected a 2 year old thread, which I find irritating at times.

By the way, time for August issues and successes thread?!?!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

I'd like to add "Printing" to the wishlist. Sometimes I read a thread that is very interesting for a colleage, so I post the URL to him, but more often I print the thread.

Would it be possible to add a [print thread] button so all the decorations are gone?

See the "print article" example on e.g. http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2002/06/04/apo5.html in the upper right corner

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

In regard to the suggestions above on "closing" a thread, It seems a good idea to do this just to stop people re-iterating an answer for points but the thread should not be closed from further replies.

My thoughts on this are that even after the raiser of the question is happy there may be further clarification that someone may want to add at a later time and which might assist anyone who locates the thread on a later search.

Also on the odd occasion someone may give an incorrect or even dangerous answer which should be corrected (Usually by Bill Hassel -God bless his cotton tea-towel) to make the thread of further use to others.

So the suggestion to have an option to close a thread from further points assignment but not replies gets my vote.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

Hi Dan,

I'm with Nick, close the thread yes but not close the replies because perhaps there are more important information, this an example:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x8773107d277ad611abdb0090277a778c,00.html

I'll try to close with a resume, but there are more interesting contributions.

Regards,

Justo.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - July 2002!

In the past I have really respected this forum and gained knowledge by it. I try to participate when I can, but time does not always allow it.

I hate to add to it, but: The last few times I have visited this forum, I just go away disgusted. All I see is "To assign points" please do this. No answer to the persons question. I also see so many threads started specifically for the "Assign points" topic. With all this talk about points, I find it hard to just browse through the topics and find the information I am looking for. I understand points are a good thing - but isn't there such a thing as "too much of a good thing"?

Would it be possible to have only HP staff concern themselves with assigning points, and not the self appointed hallway patrolmen?

If that is not possible, could we possibly have a private mail option - even if that private mail is only on this system? That way if a person just has to say something about points, they can do it without bothering the rest of us? I have seem many other bulliten boards do this, very successfully.
