Congratulations! You've finally gotten rid of Microsoft! ;-) The Microsoft forum is giving a constant 404. So don't sign off on the trouble ticket yet!

Hm,

"atlantic" again, it seems. Only 2 or 3 seconds delays when "reply"ing for me...

Merrijn: Netscape 7.0 and 7.01 don't open new windows, just show the new page in the old window :-(

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

I have seen some problems with my most recent post here that are really annoying. Check this out and you may see some of it for yourself: http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/0,,0x6a295bd3782dd711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

This posting was the one that made me painfully aware of just how bad the notifier service had gotten to be since I believe that I received a total of 3 notices that someone had posted a reply. As you can see, I received many more than that (did we ever make any progress on that??)

The other thing is the strange phenomenon that you will see mentioned toward the bottom of that thread. I would go to the page from a fresh browser instance (no browser windows open at the time, following link from e-mail) and look at the thread. What I would see then was much different than what I would see right after posting something of my own.

This isn???t the same as the time lag for people who post closely together and then get beat on the page by another server???s lag. There was several hours difference in some of the cases on my thread.

One other minor thing I noticed this morning is that my normal report for the new postings from yesterday aren???t here. Is there an online version that I can check?

How do the veterans get their info on things like that? I know they can???t be scanning each topic every minute of every day, but they always seem to have the inside scoop on the fresh questions. Come on ladies and gentlemen. ???Fess up. Where do I look?

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

John (Collier),

Dan would be in a better position to judge/know, but the big e-mail delays may be the aftermath of the SQL Slammer worm, i.e. "the Internet" is still shakey.

All,

As to browser refreshes:

I have just learned that for a *real* refresh in IE you have to hold down the Ctrl key when you click on refresh or use the F5 key, i.e. Ctrl+click or Ctrl+F5.

If you do not use Ctrl, there are scenarios where IE will *not* refresh the page from the server.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

I have never had a problem with the page refresh issue, but then again I don't use that Microsoft browser product. I tend to stick with Opera or Netscape.

As to the inside track on new questions, why would I want to give away secrets? ;) Just kidding, what I generally do is just sit at the HP-UX Family home page and hit Refresh when I get a chance and I then see what has popped to the top of the list. No real trick to it.

By the way, I gave up on the update e-mails a long time ago. By the time they come out, the info is old.

Yep, I'm with Patrick - just sit here all day, hitting reload. I used to wish that I had a life but I've now resigned myself to the fact that I never will.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Patrick,

I also never *had* problems with page refreshes, but believe me, this week I had one. The consequences were so painful that I can not give details of the particular situation.

After I had 'accidently' solved the problem (by *removing* the associated "Temporary Internet file" from my local cache, the problem was explained by one of our HP labs web gurus. It boils down to the fact that you can not have a local cache and caching proxies and temporary pages and not have this problem, so I assume that other browsers can also have this problem.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

FWIW in Opera 7 you can right click on a page and set autorefresh to 5, 15, or 30 seconds, 2, 2, 5, 15, or 30 minutes. Just goto your favourite start page and set it to the refresh interval you like :)

Enjoy, have FUN! H.Merijn [ Opera must be better in /something/ :) ]

John (and Frank),

Frank may be on the right path. The notification function utilizes email to serve the notices. Therefore, any delays in networking will delay notifications.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Dan, this is an enhancement request.

You need to include a way for people to quietly inform the moderators about posts which violate the forum rules. Preferably other than posting a reply that says "Hey Dan, take a look at this post!"

I ran into a post recently that required the attention of a moderator and I had to throw it up on the ITRC contact form and hope it landed in the right persons lap.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Dan, I screwed up and need a post removed from a thread.

I mentioned the name of an HP employee in my crack thread, and then of course he emails me and asks his name not be used.

Here is the thread link.

To avoid further damage by my stupidity, you might want to email me if you have any trouble spotting the post.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Frank, I think you hit it regarding the notifications. I've tested it and all is working. Email is used, so certainly any network issues will cause a delay at either end.

Stephen, the name you used has been removed as requested.....

Thanks Dan, You're the man.

I think I've creatively handled the distrubution problem though I've probably made alot of work for myself.

Maybe the University of Utah version will work. Probably not.

Hi Dan,

I've got a strange one for you.
Patrick's Etiquette post pinged to the top, but the last post is dated 1/5/03.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hey Jeff,

That is actually somewhat my fault. I asked Dan to change the URL in my Forums Etiquette post because I am in the process of changing companies that host my (and my wifes) personal web pages and the IP address changed.

Apparently when a change like that is made the thread get sent to the top.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Patrick and Jeff, that is an odd one. I guess if a post is edited it is brought to the top of the list. Interesting in the least. Of course, there are more things of greater priority that interest me, it just happens that this is one of them. :)
