Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but how about a forum category just for forum related issues? it can be tough sometimes to find these entries after they get buried by newer ones. This category could have posts related to forum news, new categories, problem reporting, even news on the point accomplishments of users.

Just a thought.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Dan:

For some months there has been a web "satisfaction" pop-up that appears upon login. I have yet to "qualify" to respond [and can therefore only assume that I must complain too much :-)) ]. Seriously, what data (if any) has been gleaned from this mechanism? When can we expect to see the demise of the (to me) annoying agent?

Regards!

Dan,

I really hate to say this, but the damn timing issue is back again.

Look at JRF's comments in this thread:

Dan:

Not only the mince-meat 'grep' thread that Merijn noted but this thread too (!) suffer from the mis-synchronized time keeping. Merijn's post herein predated Pete's if you were watching carefully.

I have *one* word for this *continuing* mess:

UNPROFESSIONAL

The time bug hits again. Major reordering in http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x66ac4a988422d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

As of about 17:00 things started to slowdown, decreasing the ITRC fun factor drastically (FWIW it's 17:30 now)

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

I was going to report the site as being very slow, but it just sped up.....interesting! And I also noticed the out-of-ordering of posts. Mine in that jumbled grep message should have been after Jose Maria's post.

Oh well, that's M$ products for you, instead of it making your life easier, it just complicates things :-)))))

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

I'm under the impression that http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x3aad4a988422d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html is a time victim too. In this case the question itself is casted 30 minutes back in time looking at the fact that there are three answers withing two minutes after we've seen the question appear in the list. My name in the subject of course triggered me to answer it :) which makes it rather unlikely that I missed it for so long (I'm active on ITRC all day, with processes that take rather long)

The stamp my answer got was "January 13, 2003 17:05 PM GMT", whereas it's 18:05 local time

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Dan,

a late Chrismas wish ;-)
Doing a 'Notify me' at a question, I only have the possibility to go back to the message - better would be the possibility to return to the forum like after submitting a reply, because the question is no longer interesting.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Dan,

There seems to be a regular performance problem at the moment. For about the last week or so, I've noticed a significant slowdown starting at 15:00 GMT, that only affects this site.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Every now and then, we get the regular "points issue" up for discussion, the latest being;

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x8fb34a988422d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

One of the most widely cited issues with people not assigning points at all, or not rating a solution as being a definitive fix is that you can't differentiate between the two.

Maybe another flag is needed for questions that have replies, but no bunnies assigned.

I'd suggest that something such as a question mark is used. This way, we can see the following;

Magic Answer - bunny.

Possible/partial fix - question

Unrated solution or all zeros assigned - blank.

While it won't solve the problem of people not assigning points, it would assist in guiding people towards those posts where they may be able to find a solution that has at least been tried, even if the solution wasn't perfect for that particular incident.

It also avoids putting out an overtly negative message for those questions where no points have been assigned, as the unrated solution could be either a problem for which the points have not yet been assigned as the solutions are under evaluation, a genuine case of no useful reply having been given so far, or a regular "non-giver" of points.

As far as the points issue itself goes, there will always be people in life that don't say "thanks" for whatever reason, and we all just have to learn to live with that fact.

great idea. I support this.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Chris, Jochen

I disagree:
I always see how much replies are given and so I can consider if I want to read the question either to get help or to help with an answer.
For me the bunny shows that the problem is solved and no more help is needed (unless the question is from U.SivaKumar - ;-)) only a joke).
It's also policy to close a question!

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

A new wishlist item: from one's profile it's easy to find your replies for wich you received a bunny (the right column). The left column has no indication of whatever points were or were not asigned. Now that my profile has two e-mail addresses, it's still not possible to receive notifications for interesting threads.

Thought 1. Notify if points are asigned (no bounds: 0..10), so one can give followup if needed

Thought 2. Be able to find (easy way) the last x messages that one was asigned points to, in order to see if more followup is wanted

Maybe it's only me, but most of the threads I'm answering in, deal with installation procedures of open source projects, that advance step by step, and won't profit with a single answer.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Since I had brought this up earlier in the tread, I didn't want to clog up this one with the same topic, but I can point you back to the same thread that Chris mentioned earlier if you would like to see more on my thoughts into this.

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x8fb34a988422d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

If the site is useful and doesn't have any $$ cost to you, what does it hurt if it requires you to award points to people that assist?

I promise that asigning points to an answer is less expensive than opening a tech case with HP and, in most cases, MUCH faster!!

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Dan,

The time sync problem is BACK AGAIN!!!!!

In this thread:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x2060ef70e827d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

4 out of the 7 responses (up until I'm writing this) have "occurrec" BEFORE the question was posted.

You and / or Jeff REALLY NEED to have a talk with the developers / sys admins AND their managers and get this resolved!

As JRF said previously, this is UNPROFESSIONAL!!!!!!!

Hope it helps

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Patrick and John,

Thanks for letting me know about the time synch. Ironically, this situation is due to the deployment of 2 additional servers that have tripled the capacity of the site...one reason performance has been so good. It is particularly annoying that they are not keeping the same time. I'll get with the system support team.

Thanks,
Dan
