Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Hi Dan,

Well, the search may be improved (though I haven't really noticed other than the fact that it works at all) but there's still a glitch or two left.

A boolean search for +issues +september does an admirable job of returning your Sept 2002 issues thread - it's #1 in the list of 50. However, the same search for +issues +october returns 50 unrelated items. I've tried Harry's syntax "issues AND october". I've tried "Issues AND October". I've tried "+Issues +October". No luck.

One other interesting note. When I ask for "100 results per page", I still only get 50 results.

Pete

P.S. Many, many thanks to you and the team for curing the "404/SSI/reload problem" and the other improvements.

Hi Dan,

I just noticed that when I try to login from the Login tab on the left side of the page I get a 404 error. If I select the 'my profile' tab it will take me to the login screen and I can get logged in.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Have they fixed the problem with some users not able to assign points?? I haven't posted a question in a while but a few months ago I did and it would not let me assign points which upsets the people that take the time to respond.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Hi Ken,

The points functinality works (as you can see above I have applied many). I have received reports that some users will assign points and then they don't appear. This is being looked into by the lab. So, the short answer is that you should be able to assign points. Be sure to use the provided links on the acknowledgement page to return to your message (versus the "back" button). Again, if the lab finds a problem, we'll see that it is fixed.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Dan,

Today I have not been able to reply/post virtually any messages. Everytime I try it just hangs and sits there spinning for ever. I've left it sit for over an hour with no results.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Hi Sean, not sure what to tell you. The site has been operational all day and the average number of messages is consistent with normal days. Perhaps it is a networking issue somewhere along the line you use.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Hi Dan,

Thought I'd weigh in on the points awarding situation with this question......

I wonder if this situation might be somehow related to the "new user after post/reply" situation?

I've ONLY seen this happen to me when I have 2 (two) connections to the forum & ONLY 1 logged in. Even if I only post/reply with the logged in session I will still sometimes receive that "new user" message. What cures it is to go back & login that session AGAIN.

But if I ONLY have one connection in use & logged in - I never have the problem.

I *could* imagine this to be the case if on your end you track connections by IP & you cannot distinguish individual sessions beyond the IP level.

Something to chew on......

Rgds,
Jeff

Jeff, good thoughts. I'll cover this with the lab and see what they have to say. Thanks for the ideas.

Hi Dan,

I'm having problems assigning points today. I assign the points, click the Submit button, and I get a blank page in return. I hit reload and nothing changes.

Hi Dan,

I finally did manage to get points assigned to the responses to my thread. I am now ahead by 1 again. :)

I don't know if anything changed on your end, but the computer on my end changed. It got upgraded for me.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Hi Dan,

Yesterday I noted that I couldn't login using the 'login' tab on the left side of the screen, but that I could login using the 'my profile' tab. Well, it just happened again. I gat a page not found error when I try the 'login' tab. I copied the URLs from each one and I noticed that they are going two different places, if that helps any.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Patrick, things have remained the same here. Please let me know if you have it happen again. Maybe its due to a configuration you had on your old machine.

John, thanks for the URLs, it helps very much. I appreciate it and will be submitting this info to the support team.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Hi Dan,

I posted this yesterday:

Hi,

When I want to assign points to an answer, I always have to submit twice.

When I submit the first time and go back to the message, or to the forum, and then into the message again, the points are not submitted. No error message though.

Also when I want to submit points to multiple answers at once, I often have trouble.

Is it me, my internet browser settings, or do more people experience this?

Saskia

Hi Saskia,

Yes, this has been reported before, but we are not sure why or how it occurs. From the acknowledgement page, be sure to use the links provided to get back to the message (not the browser "back" button). We know this needs more investigation. Please hang in there.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Hi Dan,
Many times when I open the link to http://www.itrc.com I get delivered to the European site and I have to click on the Americas link to get logged in since I don't have (nor need) an id onthe Europe site. And after I am in the Americas site sometimes a link will take me to the Europe site....
TIA

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Hi Dan,

I was wondering it would be nice , whenever you open a thread the answers are sorted by date by default...so that we know whats the latest answer that came in...I beleive the answers are sorted by points by default right now...
Thanks

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Hi Nag,

The default is to sort by date. If you click on "date" just below the question (above the first reply), the thread messages will sort by date. The first reply is list first, and the most recent is at the end of the thread. This is how the default is set. Hope that helps.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Dan: I believe that this isn't the first time this has been asked (although I'm a little surprised it doesn't come up more often):

Why is the text window so small for replies?

I hope that consideration is being given toward making it 80 columns. It is a constant irritant, particularly when one is trying to reply with an HP-UX command line that will answer somebody's question. It is impossible to tell if you typed it in right, since it wraps four times.

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Chime right in if anyone feels my pain...

Hi Brian,

Yes, it has been requested. There are "browser" specific reasons that it is what it is. However, I will mention this to the lab and see what it would take to enlarge. Your request has been noted....thanks for the idea.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

Hi Dan,

Can we involved a link to see how many questions have actually been assigned points.

Currently when we have everything under 1-7,rated or unrated we don't get to know if the answers were rated, unless we actually click on the questions.

Anil

And I am in full support of Brian related to the small window size.

please make it wide so that we also feel good to see what we are typing.

Currently we don't know if things would look good in the actual format.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for October 2002

About the sizes, I'd still opt for relative sizes. With my 22" LCD primary monitor (21" secondary), I've got a lot of whitespace on the forum pages. With tables that use percentage width instead of fixed width, The threads would automagically fit to my window.

For about the answering, how about also supporting block markers to preserve indent, so

--8<---
int main (int argc, char argv[])
{
printf ("Hello, world\n");
} /* main */
-->8---

would *show* that I used indents. I bet ya that - certainly in the language category - it would make a lot of people happy
