Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - September 2002

I'm following up on this thread (http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x106b402f24d5d61190050090279cd0f9,00.html) here because this is where it belongs, though wrong month.

This reply is regarding why searches suck and need to be repaired.

And of course, if you think I'm full of it try this search string:

alfred mckee

(6 results)
then this search string:

mckee alfred

(50 results)
TWO different results, yet "ALL WORDS" was chosen! I even put a space in front of the first word, but it's not a parsing issue.

OF COURSE the word ALFRED does NOT appear in the first search for " alfred mckee ".

AND of course, the search for " mckee alfred " results in hits that DO NOT contain the word MCKEE.

I tried both mozilla and EIEIO (ie) to no avail.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - September 2002

Dan,

For the last 20 minutes, I couldn't get in at all - nothing but SSI errors every time I hit reload. Tried new browser window, tried new browser (IE - don't tell anyone, OK?). Nothing.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - September 2002

Hi Dan:

A bit ditto to Pete's post above. There was a period of about 15-minutes where all I could get when I refreshed the HP-UX or Server family home was an SSI error. It seemed to be confined to the 'familyhome' level. That is, I could probe the main Forum page.

Regards!

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - September 2002

Dan,

Sorry to sound like a broken record but this morning was the same as yesterday: 404's and SSI errors from 6:15AM until @ 6:40AM EDT. I couldn't get in at all.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - September 2002

Can anyone give me a hint where to look for the fact that I can only login to the forum from home? It cannot be changed IP addresses, because I can still /read/ the forum from work. It can neither be an updated browser, because *all* my browsers do the same. They enter the loop described earlier in this thread.

Any help appreciated. You'll get perl answers in return :)

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - September 2002

Hi,

I'm facing problems with the box {View - "Message I have been notified on" } (as well as other options). I use netscape 4.75 on HP-UX B.11.00 U 9000/785 and have a proxy (tunnel).

The problem is Even after I make my selection from the list box and click on the arrow, I never get it executed. It shows "Done" in the bottom bar of Netscape ... but no proper results.

Thanks and Regards

Hi

I am having some strange problems with the search engine. Things I searched successfully on yesterday are coming up today with 0 results. Weird.

Cheers.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - September 2002

Dan right now there is a big one, there is no reply button to your msg, is there a limit on how many replies are allowed. This was just corrected in my question, got out and then back in and the buttons were there....

Other issues. Wish there was a way you could change the responses that we receive into a text format for ease of printing.
Have problems assigning points, have to do it two or three times before it takes.

Some of the older threads come back with file could not be found.

Hi Dan,

This is yet another reason to move the "Reply" and "Notify Me" buttons to the left side of the message rather than the right.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - September 2002

The search function once again is not working correctly.

I did a search for "while loop" all words of the forums, and no results come back.

I do a search for "while" and one of the results is titled "while loop not ....".

Obviously it contains both words, but why did it not come back with the first search?

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - September 2002

Better yet, have the text area of the thread adapt to the width of the browser, so all threads are as wide as the user sets the browser screen. Now I have a lot of threads where th right margin is huge (replying here it is 17 cm of whitespace!) and sometimes I have to scroll to the right to see the buttons.

Don't use fixed width, use width="60%" or alike

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - September 2002

Hi Dan,

due to the re-appearing points-discussions over the past few days, I would like to come with some (maybe new?) exhancement requests for the forums (yeah, I'll do it again):
- can we have the number of replies shown below each ones name, please? Maybe even replies vs. bunnies? That could show the *active* forumers much more than the "hats" do...
- can we have a link to your current monthly thread (like this one) in the "Fourms Update" box, please? That way especially the forums *youngsters* could find it...
- can we have read counters for the threads, please? And later *search* for it? That would be an easy and automatic way to implenting FAQs...
- can we have "HTML anchors" on the replies, please? And the "reply" number shown on the thread-page itself? Then we could point somebody directly to proper reply in an old thread... (ok, that is an older request of mine)

Well, I do need something to eat now, maybe I'll can add even more "YAERs" after the pizza ;-)
