Port Numbers

Hi All,
I submitted a request to our network group to open up the firewall for an L class that needs to run predictive software using email. The network group asked me what port I want to open. Is there a particular port that predictive uses? If not, how do I choose a port number?

For to send/receive mail operations you may have to get the below mentioned ports opened depending upon type of the s/w.
protocol port
======== ====
pop2 109/tcp
pop3 110/tcp
smtp 25/tcp
