as fare as I can remember you need to install jetDirect on the server and the workstation.
The software is not for free... could some of you HP-people elaborate.

You need to run an LPD server on your XP system to be able to use the printer in this fashion. There are many sources of this kind of software. Some are free or cheap and some come with more expensive packages.

Try a yahoo or google search on "lpd server for windows xp". You will find serveral sources from that.

Hi Lima,

If you want to print on local printer connected to winxp machine these are the steps:

1) sam
2) printers and plotters
3) lp spooler
4) printers and plotters
5) action - add remote printer/plotter
6) printer_name, ip of winxp, share name of printer on winxp machine
7) once registered, install other network and print service on windows XP machine.
For that control panel-add/remove progs-windows components and select "other network and print service"

then to verify do lpstat printer_name
and to print lp -d printer_name filename
